Ben is looking strong! He has had pretty good weather yesterday and today. He is coming up the back side of Big Pine Mountain right now. Hopefully mud and/or snow conditions are not too bad out there for him.
This year proper route riders can choose either to summit Big Pine or West Big Pine. Big Pine is higher, West Big Pine might be a little more scenic. Both are scramble hikes to reach the top. Which summit will he choose?

Wow that was one hell of an adventure. I'm still buzzing from it a day later. Anyone who hasn't ridden the rout yet is in for a treat.
Thanks Erin and Wes for meeting me at the end. That was a pleasant surprise and the beer tasted great after eating nothing but peanut butter all day.
I'm putting together a detailed recap and will share it when I'm finished. Also, if anyone has questions about the trail conditions feel free to ask.

I’m not a Gaia expert but I assume you would download the GPX file from RidewithGPS and then upload the downloaded GPX file to Gaia. Im not sure if the waypoint gpx file will upload to Gaia or not.
Looking forward to seeing Bens report. Here is a summary of what he told me:
2 to 3 feet of snow high up on Mt. Pinos. Hopefully this melts by the 26th.
Plenty of water this year. Gilliam or Gifford spring won’t be Necessary to use because the streams before that are flowing.
Miranda Pine spring has water, but lots of algae in the tank. Small stream flowing near the spring though.
Some deadfall on Big Pine Mountain. Last year there were no downed trees, so get ready to hop some trees this year.

You need to download the GPX, email it to your phone, then open the attached GPX in Gaia. Then Gaia will import it. I always use Gaia as a backup. But make sure you download the maps for the track on Gaia... |

Hey Greg,
It was my first time on the rout so I don't know how the road condition compares to previous years but it seems that the winters rain had taken a tole on the road up by Big Pine Mountain. There were quite a few rock/mud slides many of which I had to walk my bike through also quite a few downed trees. Once I got past Big Pine mountain the road improved quite a bit but there were still a few tricky rock slides to navigate. The decent down from Little Pine to Camuesa was super fun, fast and rocky. I actually slashed my tire sidewall hitting some of the rock slide too fast and had to tube it. Here's some pics.

Great pics Ben. Last year there were no downed trees on Big Pine, but on the years where we get gnarly storms (like this year) old dying trees can come down. Those trees burned in the Zaca fire back in 2007, and all it takes is some strong wind to take them down. Not a good idea to camp near one of these trees on a windy night. That's why they call them "widow makers". If anyone is looking for a "shake down ride", I just rode the Ojai Rim Loop. The trails and dirt roads are in excellent shape right now and the wildflowers are popping. The chaparral is coming back to life now that the Thomas Fire is almost 18 months behind us. Here is the route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/29614826I strongly recommend this ride as a 1 night, 2 day training ride. The hike out and back to Hines Peak in my opinion is a must, but it obviously can be skipped if you want to speed it up or if you don't have much time. Just make sure to get about 5 liters of water at the Stagecoach Store at mile 16. There is no water up on the ridgeline or on Hines Peak. A little snow up there still though. There is also a fast food joint there that has pretty good food. Go get it! |

HI all,
I'm planning a trip to leave in 10 days to start in Monterey and drop into SLO, to Pozo across private land ( got permission) then joining the Tour De LP at 166 and going into the Carrizo, and then hoping to ride over Big Pine road down to Camuesa connector, and ultimately out Romero canyon or one of the other trials.
Ben,
Any beta on snow conditions or some of the closed trails and roads along that last part of the route?

You should be able to download the waypoints from the TDLP website (.gpx format). Email them to yourself, then open in Gaia. That'll import them. I just did it and verified it myself in Gaia. Worked great. |
