Why not start a bit later? Frazier Park is high up and we'll climb, no midmorning heat to beat. Without Mt Abel (which absolutely needs to go), we'll hit Carizzo in the afternoon. A 10 am start (or even noon) in Frazier Park seems logistically easier and avoids getting going when it is still dark (as we did last year). With a later start, Miranda Pines becomes a more reasonable stopping point at day 2, otherwise it will be too early for pretty much everybody.

I really hate cues, but I know they are helpful.  2015 Cue sheets now are up!

Don't take the mileage too literally.  I was off by 20 miles in 2014!

To answer the question about the shuttle, I need to know by April 3rd!  Otherwise you are on your own!

I ran into Art DeGoede near Gibraltar Dam a few weeks ago randomly and he was on his Tandem with his wife. He gave me a lot of crap for eliminating Mt. Abel from the route. I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinion.  That is why I left it in as an "option".  Its a mountain bikers mountain!

I'll see you all at the start on the 17th. Is there an official sign up? Roland - as far as I'm concerned the earlier we star t the better. As much as I love riding at night, I'd like to take advantage of the daylight.

Blake, looking forward to seeing you at the start... And then never again!

The only sign up is on Trackleaders, which will be up soon.

The 8:30 start is so morning commuters coming from LA, Ventucky and SB can leave at 6:15, which is still pretty early, but much better than 5:00 am like last year.  There is a big stretch of the Carrizo Plain that will make for an enjoyable, non-technical night ride on night #1.

Hey all-- I am looking at the tour de los padres.  Looks super fun and an epic challenge. Thanks for figuring this 'trail' out.  I am having difficulty opening the waypoints link though.   I am wondering what I have to have on my computer to open it?  Anyone get it open successfully?  I can open everything else, but I am not crazy enough ( yet) to tackle the 300 mile proper tour de los padres, I want the 148 mile shorter version Smiley  I also want to go and do the tour piece by piece, so I am ready for April 17th.

Thanks,
KAren

I use Garmin Mapsource for viewing and loading waypoints into my GPS, but its not good for viewing where they actually are on Google Maps.  I discovered Hillmap.com recently and it works really well for this.  Here is the link for the waypoints:

As far as I know, there are 4 others doing the "tour" route this year (2 of which are women), so you should have some company.

Thanks.  I guess that's not what I thought it was either.  I think I need the cues for the tour??  There is a great excel paper for the proper.  It says where the campgrounds are, the restraunts, the miscellaneous tid- bits that help us stay on trail....looking for that for the tour.  So I can map out where to stop for the nights.   I have the info for the first part up to the Santa Barbara Pistachio Farm.  That is about where the proper heads off to Carrizo Plains and the tour turns into the Los padres Wilderness.  Thx

sweet...it looks like all things are coming together and I'll be able to toe the line on the 17th.

Looking to see if the shuttle still has seats (if so I'll take one) and/or hook up with other racers to get to the start from SB.

Hi everyone...I'm Rob, new to the forum but will be participating in the TDLP this year (officially have the time off work!). Just wanted to ask a few questions....

I am also interested in a seat on the shuttle if there are any still available, if not I have room in my car to go bring one other person to the trail if there is anywhere to leave a vehicle? Also wondering what types of GPS units everyone will be using. I have a Garmin Fenix watch I had planned on using, but I don't think the battery will last the whole weekend with the GPS on the whole time. I see going by map is not a very safe option...

The deadline for the shuttle is april 3. I just need to let my cab driver know how many people ahead of time so he knows how many drivers he will need. He has plenty of vehicles. Just private message me and ill give you my address or paypal email. Deposit is $30 for a spot on the shuttle and you will need to pay another $15 or $20 when you get dropped off, depending on total number of people.

Rob, you are correct, navigating using maps would be almost impossible. If your watch will load the gpx file, i guess that will work, but you definitely will want to bring an extra battery. I use an etrex 20 and will go through 4 aa batteries usually.

I'll attempt to load the gpx file tonight. My watch can only charge via USB so I bought a solar charger on Amazon that I can clip to my backpack. If anyone else has a similar issue, the solar chargers are on sale for $35 (regular $100) on Amazon.com right now and only weigh 1.6 oz.

You will likely have to split the GPX file into 2 or 3 segments.  GPS Trackmaker is free and simple to use software for this.

Thoughts on riding this route with a rigid fork?

The last 30 miles would suck with a rigid fork. Roland is gonna love the finish! Other than that I guess you would be ok.

Gregg, glad you are in.  Your questions seem fitting for the forum. Hope you don't mind I post them here.

"When does the shuttle leave SB? I'm looking at my transport options."

Shuttle will leave at 6 am from the Santa Barbara train station (which is also the finish point).

"Where do you plan on stopping the first day? Where did most of the racers camp the first night?"

"somewhere" in the Carrizo Plain is a good goal.  Some riders will make it all the way to Selby Campground at mile 120 where there are water spigots, but anywhere around mile 77 through mile 100 will work just fine and is nicer in my opinion than camping with cars.  The key is to fill up big time on water in Ventucopa so you have enough to get to Selby.
