Chris is insane.  He has tree trunks for legs.  I hope he kills it (and it looks like he's doing just that!).

Is john Nobile still in the race? I didn't hear him calling in and officially bowing out yet?

OK, just heard Jill Homer's call-in:) He's still riding with her... His SPOT must be shut off, or malfunctioning...

Being on a SS, he's logging some serious miles;)

Current records:
For the whole Banff - Antelope Wells route: Jenn Hopkins `08 (SS) 28:16:40
For the Roosville - Antelope Wells GDR: Kent Peterson `05 (SS) 22:03:09; Jenn Hopkins `08 (SS) 22:18:40; Nathan Bay `07 (SS) 25:08:37

Just how big a gear is he running with all those climbs and carrying gear?  Does he have to push up the steeper parts of climbs?

I think I'll leave the story telling up to Chris - but he is one strong kid.  He excels at low cadence and can wrap it out when he needs to.

Have you seen his kit?  My money says it's the lightest in the race.  I don't think he is even using a pack, but I could be wrong.  Weight weenie extradordinaire, with years of hard work in the legs - he is reaping some fruit right now!

32:18 with a 29" WTB Nanoraptor tire = ~51.5" gear. People have run both larger and smaller ratios.

That is actually less gear than he had planned on running.  Glad to hear he came to his senses Wink

Other than Marni's pics of the start, I haven't seen any others and that's always fun to look at but I was surprised at how little Chris had. I saw one bottle on the frame. What the hell is he doing for water? Whatever it is it must be working for him. Super glad to see him puttin in such a tough ride.

I saw that pic as well.  No pack and only 1 visible water bottle.  I'm wondering how much water he is carrying and how.  Hopefully we'll hear when he gets back.

THe frame pack I imagine is where the rest of his water is.

Seems like the more people do it, the more they know about refuel spots.

Carrying less weight over that many miles is the same strategy I would take.

Matt Lee was packless last year as well, I didnt see a pic for this year, but I magine the same again.

More tinkering with the tracking software today...

Added miles per day calculation to individual pages (Matt Lee = 152 miles per day!)
Full split chart with estimated arrival times: http://tourdivide.org/files/tracker/spot/divide/tracker-divide-spec.php
(these are based on route average speed and distance along route to the waypoints)
Links on past 25 points, individual pages (pops up bubble on map)
Race clock time on split chart
Elapsed race time in bubbles on individual pages
A few people have pictures now (thanks to Marni).. the SPOT adventures logo is blocking some of them, though

Going packless is key for the GDMBR.  I tried it last year and it was significantly better for my body.

Speed vs. time!!!!

There is no mystery left.  All secrets have been revealed.   headbang

Fantastic work Scott.  Very cool!

And...I wonder if Kurt and Chris can feel the Petervary freight train breathing down their neck??  That gap is shrinking, oh that is one bad ass tandem.

Apparently flat terrain is good for tandem riders...

if you aren't listening to the phone-ins, you ought to at least listen to this one from Jeff.  They say that sleep deprivation causes hallucinations, so the question that will remain unanswered -- was Josh real or imagined?    headbang

I just added the Female/SS record (thanks to Paula for doing the math on it).  All the women in the race (Jill, Cricket and Deanna) are ahead of record pace so far.  It should be noted that Jenn Hopkins (record holder) took a leisurely prologue for the Canadian section (6 days) before ramping it up to race from border to border.

Also, check out Brad Mattingly:

http://tourdivide.org/leaderboard/2009/individual?name=Brad%20Mattingly

He seems to have gone astray over the first continental divide crossing.  D'oh!  This was one of the few places I got lost in 2004.

Paula and I were thinking of awarding a 'wanderer' / bonus miles award (maintained automatically by SPOT of course) for the rider with the most off course miles.

ScottM,

Thanks for all the amazing work you are putting into the tracking software;)

Kevin,

Kickass updates. You know how to make them exciting;)

OTOH, I'm glad for Joe Meiser that he's moving again. Too much of a break can mess with you mind... Hope his Fargo won't give him problems anymore . Go Joe headbang headbang headbang

I think that should, as of now, to Brunello Godio. I saw his SPOT off course at least 3 times. But he always finds his way back and keeps going. What a guy!!!

Oh man, there are so many places to screw up between Lincoln and Butte. There are definitely a few instructions in the map that don't translate well to the confusing junction you might be seeing in front of you. Rudi and I got off our bikes a few times looking for that lone Nanoraptor track of Matt Lee to show the way. It's got to be harder when you've got a gaggle of people in front of you, some of whom are guessing wrong.
