Thanks Jill! And thanks ACA!

Jill, a very fitting touch on Dave B's article.  A nice touch in a truly professional manner. Lexi and Linnaea must be swelling up with pride to see this tribute.  They remain in my prayers as they continue to cope with this situation.   ....ride on Dave!

Lufthansa stuck me good for transporting my bike 150€ one way!

A bike is "special" bagage now.  bs

I payed $45.00 to take my bike on United to Calgary and $50.00 from Phenoix to Jackson Hole, WY on Frontier Airlines. How? I removed the fork, bars, pedals and put it in a smaller frame box with my TD gear stuffed around it. I modified another box to fit my 29er wheels and the rest of my gear. Shipped as 2 checked bags. It's a little more tear down and put together time but worth the savings.
and put the frame in a small frame box and put the 29er wheels in another

Hey

American airlines took me for 100$ one way from PHX to YYC. When i got there it had ben re-sealed with both TSA and Canadian customs tape. Then Canada customs took my dog spray away from me ( in with my bike ). It was quite amusing.

Cheers

It's snowing in the Tetons and Wind Rivers of Wyoming. I've got the wood stove fired up right now.

He's also gonna be riding in the dark a quite a bit if he is going for the record, which I suspect he is.

He has a great dynamo light set and seems pretty adept at sleep deprivation.

The snow situation will be interesting for him - less snow-pack, more fresh stuff than when he set the record for border to border.

Good luck!

Simon, any idea what the specifics are of his setup?

I went on a singletrack group ride last night in the woods and it was a bit challenging with a dynamo. It did make it very exciting going over obstacles and ramps. Setup was SON Delux + Supernova E3 triple. I'm going to try the SON Edelux headlamp next.

Sorry, I don't know the name of it. It's very light and incredibly low drag, but also quite pricey (which is why I didn't commit the name to memory).

He has it set into his front fairing.
WRT the fairing, obvously it improves aerodynamics, but it also makes it a lot more comfortable to ride in cold, wet conditions (based on experience with a Zzipper fairing).

John Nobile has a kind of genius start date IMHO. Seems  riding in the dark could be a worthwhile trade off for not slogging through mud. As long as warm clothes and a good lights it should be cool, dry, and fast. Start mid week also smart, could have better chance of spending a few hours at the cabin in the middle of the flathead on night one without weekend partiers there. Hmmm. Go John!

John's planning to start at 9 a.m tomorrow morning (Wednesday, Sept. Cool. I just talked to him tonight. He's feeling a bit under the weather and is worried he might be coming down with a cold, but otherwise excited to get started. He's using a similar setup to previous years (faring and rear trunk), with a few tweaks to his kit, and from what I understand it's even lighter. He's also using a more tricked-out lighting system, although I didn't think to ask the specifics of it (a gear-minded person I am not.)

He seems a little nervous about the cold (snow in northern Montana above 6,000 feet this past weekend), but says he's prepared for night riding. Still intimidating.

He's going to swing by the post office at 8:30 and ride straight up to the Spray River trailhead. If you wanted to say hello, it might be good to drop by 15 or so minutes early, because he'll probably just start his tracker and go.

Do you know if he's planning to call in? I haven't heard from him. I assume he'll be using a Spot.

Anyone know if his Spot will be showing up on the tourdivide.org leaderboard?
