I see why everyone in Helena is congregating at the motels on the east side of town...
... Record daily maximum rainfall set at Helena Mt...
a record rainfall of 0.86 inch(es) was set at Helena Mt today. This breaks the old record of 0.7 set in 1897.
KootenayB, I was speculating rear derailleur because that was the exact (within a few hundred feet I think) where Joe Meiser's rear derailleur and hanger were destroyed last year. Thick clay mud is amazingly effective at pulling derailleurs into the spokes. The single-speed fix doesn't always work, especially with a mud-filled chain...often the chain tries to shift up the cassette and then snaps.
Mountain Turtle's plan is working!

And, uh, how does M. Lee keep mud from killing his bike? pixie dust?
Get off in the worst mud. Keep cleaning it out. Carry your bike. Pray to god of your choice.

Looks like Matt is riding okay beyond Lima. It's soft for sure but it appears he's rolling and mostly through the very worst of the mud (so far). This is the location last year from his "this f**king sucks" note he left for Kurt and I recently sans Joe. The picture is on the old laptop and I'm here in STL but I will see what I can round up today.
Kurt and I had a dry afternoon until near the border where new rain didn't drastically screw us over. I *think* Matt will continue to have an improving route for a little while but there are some spots coming up, for sure after the rail trail and the pavement that could be really boggy again.
I'm feeling really bad for Erik.
The rest of the riders further back, stay warm in the snow and be careful. If you stick this out, you'll warm up down the line somewhere and this will be an epic story for you.

Here's a shot of Jon Billman's ride (taken by his wife at the start in Banff). It's a Siren "John Henry" 29er SS, with Stan's NoTubes. I'm sure this is the cleanest both rider and bike will look for awhile ...

Yeah, two broken derailleurs and forced to hitch a ride in miserable weather, only to then be stuck in Lima waiting for replacement parts? That's about as low as it can get after riding as strongly as he was.
I love Blaine's call-ins. He's having a hell of a ride, too, and he sounds so positive despite the rough weather! And Marshall, too!

If one had vast amounts of lube and could get the chain oozing till it glistens, would it make any difference at all under those conditions? Probably not but I'm sure someone has tried.

Nope, the mud builds up on the tires, gets scraped off by the frame, chain, derailleurs, etc. And the more it builds up, the worse it gets. Often times, the only way to move forward is to carry the bike. If you try to ride, it might be alright for a short distance, but in a single revolution of the wheel, an inch or more of new much can suddenly take hold, grab the rear derailleur cage, and suck it into the spokes. It usually happens so fast you don't even realize it was happening until you look down and see your derailleur pointing toward the sky instead of the ground.

Hey krefs - When following a rider, you mentioned 'his pace is back to walking speed.' How can you tell that? Is it just the distances between the Spot 10 min updates or is there something I could be watching?
Thanks!
Darren

looks like Dave B is waiting for the USPO in Wise River to open... must have stayed in the Wise River Hotel / Club nearby.
Streetview is pretty cool for this sort of thing... but at the same time - there are fewer and fewer places that are 'nowhere'.

Click on the rider's dot, then on the full history for the rider, and then scroll down below the map. Listed are the most recent points, straight-line distance between those points, and the average speed calculated from that distance. If the speed drops below 3 mph, they're probably walking.

A frame with more clearance can buy a little time but if the mud is sticky there is really nothing much you can do. You could spray your bike down with PAM or silicone spray but it will wear off pretty fast.

This morning John Foster got a few miles south of Butte, stopped on the side of the road for 20 minutes, then turned around and returned to town. Forgot something? Mechanical problem? Weather took a turn from bad to worse? Craving another hot coffee?

John Foster on the road south of Butte again. Looks like he lost 2 hours in his short run back to Butte.

Hopefully we'll here. Maybe he went back to the outdoorsman?
EDIT: In 2008 I left helena and then had to return as the repair didn't take. Sort of a bummer but best to use shops while you have them available. After the outdoorsman there is only a small shop in Pinedale (super nice but very limited) in the hardware store until Steamboat. Jackson is a WAYS off route.

Sitting here at work thinking to my self that all those riders must be hating life with that weather, but then I thought, what could be worse and it hit me, sitting here at work wishing I was on the trail hating life in that weather.
Scott you're doing a great job with the forum and I appreciate it very much
All the families that are watching there loved ones riding the TD you should be very proud.

If anyone at the Outdoorsman or other bike shop in the area is reading this ... and you happen to run into Jon Billman, tell him to get his SPOT working or turned on. His family would appreciate it. It's been off since Lincoln (site of his last call-in). Also, thanks to everyone for all the various info coming in. Following this thing is addictive and we need our frequent fixes.
