Forest Baker is putting on a first class chase. At 10:38 he's in the same location that Blain was at 07:29. Just 3 hours travel time behind. They may see each other in Lima, depending on how each is impacted by the mud.
[and a plug for Lima. Based on my experiences on a slow tour of the GDMBR in 07... For a town with only a handful of buildings, it has possibly the finest services you could hope for: Peat's Bar has the best steak on the route, Jan's cafe has the best locally made sausages on the route, and Mt View Motel/RV has the most hospitable hosts you could ever hope for. When we spent the night at Mt View Motel they handed us a laptop to use for the evening - jeez, what kind of motel is nice enough to loan you a laptop so you can make use of of their internet service?]

I've been telling Scott for a while that it would be awesome to have a radar overlay on the tracker...easier said than done, though, I imagine.

If anyone at the Outdoorsman or other bike shop in the area is reading this ... and you happen to run into Jon Billman, tell him to get his SPOT working or turned on. His family would appreciate it. It's been off since Lincoln (site of his last call-in).  Also, thanks to everyone for all the various info coming in. Following this thing is addictive and we need our frequent fixes.  Looks like he's back on track, just headed out of Helena! |

I for one am bummed about Erik, after catching up to Matt which is a Feat, and then now having to wait, I am curious and anxious to see him get back on the road!
As well, to hear Matt Lee in the call in say the previous section was the hardest thing he has ever done on a bike makes me gasp in amazement.
but we all say that dont we? I know I have said it at least a dozen times.

So Kurt was spot on with his guess of Eric's derailleur issues. Impressive. Also, strange how firsthand experience is more accurate than my uninformed WAGs. Wierd!
I'll try to be quiet now, but the current mudfest makes we wonder why Rohloffs are not popular for the race or route? Seems the perfect application, albeit ~1.5 lbs heavier than a XT type build. Any thoughts?

Chris pushed a big gear. It made me tired trying to keep up with him on climbs. but the current mudfest makes we wonder why Rohloffs are not popular for the race or route Only the Europeans seem to run them. They have their own types of problems...complicated mess of cables, broken brackets that are supposed to hold the hub in the dropouts at a certain orientation, extra pieces to convince the hub to work with odd dropout/frame designs, etc. Plus there's added resistance in the system in most gears. I seriously considered one last year but decided against it after talking to a few riders who had a lot of experience with them. Not to mention the cost... |

Most of the SS'ers are running about a 52 inch gear. Pete Faeth is running about a 55, and I believe that's also what Chris set the record with. I have my bikepacker set up at about 55 inches also. I personally can't see running less than 52 inches, but then I'm not racing the divide on my SS. I'd run 55 inches if/when I do Tour Divide. It's entirely possible I'd regret it. Didn't Deanna Adams run her fixie at something like 64 inches? I wonder if she would have been faster if she geared lower? bruce.b |

Dave B considered the Rolhoff too, after losing his drive train on the VT 50 last year... pretty sure he opted for standard mech though.
I think Chris ran 32/18?

Looks like Dave B's spot is still sitting at the PO in Wise River. Hopefully he's moved up the course and forgot to turn it back on... or maybe he shipped it home...  |

Not sure what size SS setup my bro started out running (maybe one of you gear-heads can tell by the photo) ... but I know it wasn't his ideal choice, as his bike/frame came together at the last minute.
He had planned to switch it out at the Glacier Cyclery in Whitefish, though.

Wow. Kent Peterson is one chronically happy mountain turtle. I mean that as a compliment. While everyone is slogging through the soup, he's as chipper as can be, raving about the accommodations (no matter how spartan) and the majestic wonder of the mountains. Love it. His call-ins remind of the Brits from a few years back -- everything, no matter how rough, was simply "brilliant" ... |

A little history on Kent, He was the first person ever to complete the Border To Border Divide Ride on a single speed. He is a regular bicycle advocate and commuter, I recommend looking for his write up on his first Great Divide ride and reading it, it was inspiring, he certainly does have the right disposition to keep it all in perspective.
