It looks like Matthew Lee made it up La Manga Pass in about a half hour. I have done that climb many times and it generally takes me about 45 minutes (when I'm rested). He's moving right along.

The comment about the helmet is concerning. Though I think given enough force no helmet can completely protect you.

I would say there is a 99.9999% chance he WAS wearing his helmet on a gravel downhill, alone, in the middle of nowhere.

I'm so sad to hear that Dave B. passed away; I talked to him the day before the race, he seemed like really nice guy. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.
In an earlier post someone mentioned a fund or something for the family, I would like to donate some $ to them, does anybody know where I can do this?

Hi Phil, I haven't heard anything more about $$ for the family, but Dave's family has requested: "Dave's family would like to thank the Tour Divide community for their thoughts and support through this tragedy. They ask that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in his memory to the Green Mountain Club" https://www.greenmountainclub.org/Bob

It's a sad time for the bikepacking community. Dave was a great contributor here on the site, intelligent and kind, willing to go out of his way to answer people's questions and share his experience. His preparation and passion for Tour Divide this year were obvious in his posts, here and on his blog.
He will be missed. My thoughts will be with him and his family, now, and especially during my next bikepacking trip / race.

It was terrible to hear of Dave's passing. Like many others I only knew him via his blog and his posts on here but the world is poorer for his loss. My thoughts are with his wife and daughter. I guess like many people I was looking to Dave calling in to say he was looking forward to getting back next year to finish the race...
As to the helmet thing, most tests only simulate a fall from 1m or a collision at 12mph...not something you always get in the real world, they can help but if they offered the sort of protection that some think they do WTF don't they make tanks and bullet proof vests out of them?!
Lets all stay safe and appreciate our moments on this world with the people we love.
Alex

My heart goes out to all of Dave's friends and family. This is a Huge loss for everybody. I feel Extremely lucky to have met Dave and share a bunk room with him at the Y before the start. Dave was a mighty fine fellow. I was able to share a conversation on the route about Dave B. with Dave T. also from VT. he had nothing but great things to say about him. A huge loss for everybody. Very sad days.
Best wishes to all the friends and family -Jim

My heart goes out to his family and all who knew Dave. I`m just a simple fan of the race and a fan of those who participate in it. I hope his family can carry on knowing he was living life fully and will be an inspiration to many around the world forever. I`m deeply saddened and my best goes out to all. I went back through my pictures of my very short tour this year and found this one of all of us including Dave before the start. He had the same smile for the entire two days before the start. He is in the front bottom in a green jacket next to his and now my friend Dave T. This tragedy is heavy on my mind and heart. Best wishes to all.

It looks like Kent P. is racking up some extra credit bonus miles.

So sad to hear about Dave B. Another moment that makes me appreciate what I have and what I can accomplish. We can never stop doing what we need to do.
I noticed Kent was off course on the tracker and thought he had gotten back on, but the tracker still shows him off. Maybe he's just sight-seeing....I've ridden some good miles with him, so I'm not worried he'll sort it out soon.

Hey everybody, First of all, I'd like to offer my condolences to Dave Blumenthal's family, especially his wife and daughter. I can't imagine what they're going through right now. Secondly I just wanted to clear up the speculation regarding Kent Peterson's course deviation. After a tough couple of days, he's decided to call it quits. You can read about his decision at his blog. It wasn't an easy decision for him to make, but we're all really proud of him. To be able to ride 2K+ miles (he rode from Issaquah to Banff as a warmup) self-supported, on a single speed at 51 years old is an incredible achievement. Go Mountain Turtle! -Eric Peterson

Can you help put some faces with names ... I've figured out a number of who's who from various sources, but a listing L-R, front row/back row might be nice if someone knows the gang. Thanks! P.S. Good ride, MTN Turtle! The bike gave out before you did.

Thanks for the update Eric - sad to hear your Dad is heading home after all the work, but looking forward to riding with him here. It was a valiant effort for a tough event. Bravo!

Matt has put in a big day. From Horca all the way to Abiquiu Resevoir on the fire detour route. What an emotional day of riding it must have been - for Matt & everyone...incredible.
