AIDEN is moving right along and, if the stars align, will make the border by midnight.
ERIC and FOREST are now out of the Gila. ERIC is past Mimbres on the short stretch of dirt on Georgetown Road. FOREST is an hour or two behind on the paved road before Mimbres. I wonder if either of them is so motivated to beat 20 days that they will ride through the night.
It looks like everybody else has made good progress today. DAVID G will undoubtedly reach Grants, for a 200 mile all-paved day. PATRIC TSAI made it ~100 miles to Salida at ~2:30 and his spot has been off since then. Maybe he's getting a bike overhaul and a few good meals.
The weather forecast for the next few days includes chance of thunderstorms. I hope nobody else faces bad mud.

Just talked to Forest. He's going to stay in Silver City tonight & meet up with Matt, Erik, Aidan (??). Eric Nelson is ahead of him in Silver City and he's trying to get him word that there's a crew mtg up. If anyone has a way to text Eric, please hit him up.
Otherwise, Forest said he thought Eric might be hoping to ride through anyway.... so no worries.

Let's not digress from the spirit here...this is a friendly crowd. I imagine Erik is proud to have finished what he started last year. It was heartbreaking to see him stuck in Pie Town last year after succumbing to sickness. Blaine Nester on the other hand...He was impressive last year, never wavering. This year they were both just incredible! |

Looks like Aidan is getting real close! Not sure about that area, but it is windy and HOT (113 today) in Phoenix. I don't think the climate is much different in AW. Way to go Aidan! I got to hang out with him before the start. He is about the coolest guy you would ever want to meet. Strong work to everybody!

113?!?! I can't imagine riding in that kind of heat--never mind racing! Kudos to some truly tough riders out there. I hope that everyone stays hydrated and safe. |

Thank you so much for all the pictures that are posted here!! It really gives us a feel for what our racers are seeing! It is an astoundingly beautiful country we live in and we especially love to see it from the riders perspective!! Can't wait to hear the stories!!

Looks like Matthew Arnold has a mechanical problem  He and Marshal were still riding together at noon, south of Pie Town. Then Matthew stopped for 10 minutes, then continued moved forward at a walking pace for nearly two hours. He reached a ranch house at 13:51, hopefully somebody is home and hopefully it's a problem that the ranch will have the tools to fix so he doesn't have to get to a town with a bike shop. Welding torch? New chain? New pedal? |

As of last year there was a 29er tire in the box at the toaster house. It's worn but still good if by chance he destroyed a tire out there. No where else to get one out there really.

Matthew Arnold update: He went to a second ranch house a mile further. Spent ~10 minutes at the second house, and seems to have a cure. After leaving the second house at 14:51 he has been traveling at 7-10 MPH. Maybe he just needed to use a tool he didn't have, since he didn't spend enough time to actually get a part delivered. YEAH!
I don't know any of these cyclists, but I relive my own tour of the GDMBR each year by watching their spot dots and listening to their call-ins. It's great vicarious living.
And advice for those of you considering the route at either tour or race pace... New Mexico is getting a bad rap this year. It was our favorite state. Brazos Ridge around the Cruces Basin Wilderness is beautiful. Polvedera Mesa, which 2010 cyclists miss due to wildfire, is beautiful. And the standard rough dirt route (not the approved paved alternate) between Cuba and Grants is terrific [whereas the paved alternative that nearly all racers take is notorious for drunk drivers and big dogs]. The stretch through the Gila is lovely. The road quality in New Mexico is not up to Colorado standards, but it's certainly ridable if it's not wet, and the scenery is great. The bad drivers (not unlikely to include DUI) and dog problems reported this year are not an issue between Abiquiu and Grants via the rough dirt road routing that the racers in 2010 were not able to use due to fire and rain.

This comment made me smile, just because my experiences would lead me to give the exact opposite advice - Don't Underestimate New Mexico. For me, it was a hard, hard slap in the face, especially after 2,000 miles. Rain every day, significant mud-pushing every day, a steady stream of vicious dogs, and a moderate case of hypothermia (beyond shivering, into sleepy phase) going through the Gila in July. And I saw a huge number "bad drivers" on the route from Abiquiu to Cuba, in the form of stuck cars and half-rolled cars and drugged-out hippies along the many miles of Rainbow Gathering festivities. And then the mud ... the MUD! I still have nightmares. But, yeah, I'll admit it New Mexico was quite beautiful, and the Gila smelled lovely when drenched in rain. It just goes to show that everyone has a significantly different experience on the route, and that's really the beauty of it. |
