The tent symbol is automatic. Most folks turn the unit off at night to save battery power and because you have to reset it once a day anyway for tracking.
You should turn the SPOT off during night to save power (batteries). Once I forgot to turn it off (and my mileage slowed down to 2 inches per hour :-), and once I woke up during the night and turned it off.

That's very interesting. You mention on your website that a trike might have some advantages. I can imagine there will be less stress on the backside and the hands. Do you have other advantages in mind?

Just finished up the new TD rig. Thought I would share it with you all. Under the gun to get on the road to tour down to Silver. http://cjellmoney.wordpress.com/Can't wait to see the crew in AW. Message to all starting in Banff: You will be passing a number of NOBO's this year. We started on the same day and the same time as you. We started from the very place you are headed, and are going to the place you began. Do not be surprised. I plan on upping my trash talking directed mainly at SOBO's this year. See you in Wyoming suckas.

Cjell, what do you mean you are going "North-bound"? I don't understand. You mean there are people racing the TD who aren't starting in Banff? I'd be careful and not get too close to them. I bet these people haven't had their shots. Forest

Trikes are allot like a box of jellybeans, there are many different colors and flavors and you don't really know what your getting until you bit into one. Assuming the right trike is used, which as of this writing I don't have the right trike. I can sleep on the trike (less gear), I don't need heavy: bags, racks, or panniers, more ground clearance. I can ride through snow and sand. My drivetrain is higher of the ground than most mountain bikes. I can just lay back in complete comfort and turn the cranks and work on my tan! I can use less energy not having to balance on slow technical climbs. I can roll very fast through most stuff where bikes have to pick a line. On some trikes I can ride no hands indefinitely. The list goes on and on. My only down side to a trike is weight and traction (assuming a conventional tadpole trike), there are better trike choices but I have not been able to get my hands on those.

Hey Cjell, I'll play. Wanna make a bet on who gets further this year before crossing paths? I'm not saying I'll be the first SOBO, but I bet I can get past last years golden spike before you can. I'll even say that I can get into Colorado before you can get to Wyoming. Well? Loser buys the firecrackers! Craig.

Marco, those alternates are effectively the race route. You don't have to take them but they are legal, faster, easier and almost everyone will take them.

I must say that watching Billy R heading north is getting kinda exciting. I mean, will he make it to Banff for the Grand Depart? What a great appetizer to fuel the desires!

A friend stopped at my house doing the tour divide as a tour and recommends Gold Pan RV (cabin special) on the south side of Platoro. http://goldpanrv.comJealous that I'm not heading to Banff! Jarral

Too bad, because the standard Cuba to Grants trail is quite beautiful! I'm sure Cjell is going that way!!

I cannot seem to acquire Rocky gore tex socks anywhere in Los Angeles. REI said they were waiting for their restock shipment to come in, and then the next time I went in they said they would no longer carry them. Any recommendations for a place to purchase them before I leave for Banff on Tuesday?
