If I'm reading the NWS map correctly, I see recent (24h) snowfall in ID, WY, and CO, and very slow melt up in Canada (although it is picking up).

If anyone has any on-the-ground route beta about snow depth and snow quality (postholing into slush puddles?), I'm sure many of us would love to hear.

I fully expected some snow up until about Whitefish, but was hoping that would be about the end.  Any veterans care to guess what the trail will look like two weeks from now?

Hey there TD'ers,

Managed to fit in a training ride down to Elkford and back on Friday and Saturday.  Raining and cold on the way down to Elkford.  About 400 metres of snow to push through over Elk Pass.  It was a good test of the kit.  (Take Robin's advice, GoreTex socks are the ticket).  Came back over from Elkford on Saturday in cloudy but dry weather.  No bears seen, but lots of tracks and scat.   Saw Jason from Vermont yesterday afteroon on the Spray Lakes Road.  He was planning on camping at Boulton and making the push over Elk Pass today.

Attached a Pic of the biggest snow patch on Elk Pass.

Greg

Billy left Como about an hour ago heading north, sorry no pictures I was not ready!

He is feeling strong but has had some major mechanical issues, spent the morning in Salida getting them fixed, said I would see him again in about 23 days!

Question for anyone with medical knowledge.  What prophylactic/emergency antibiotics do people carry or recommend for this sort of event.  Disclosure - I am an anaesthesiologist married to a physician travelling with a surgeon, but none of us has any infectious disease experience.  I was thinking along the lines of a stat course of tinidazole (4 x500mg) for giardiasis/diarrhoea and a weeks worth of 500mg BD Ciprofloxacin for any other systemic illnesses or wound infections.

I could see a travel medicine specialist, but I am working every day until I leave and the hospital pharmacy can get me whatever I write a script for.

Cheers, Nick

Haven't heard from him in a few days. Hopefully he'll call in.

He said he was averaging 150 miles a day  but that the southern parts of the ride had been really tough on his bike. He prefers an early start but because of the delay in Salida was going to keep on going tonight as far as he can.

Perhaps I should mention the pass is not open yet, well the gate is closed, you can get around it. We had hardly any snow until late March, however the usual reason for delay in opening is the infighting between the various authorities as to who is going to clear it.

I forgot to ask him about the Gold Dust Trail, presume it is not part of the route this year.

Just mentioning what a ER Dr. Friend of mine warned me about. Cipro can cause Achilles tendon issues, up to and including complete separation. I have heard the same thing from two separate physicians.

I figure the same Giardia meds but Doxcy for an antibiotic.

I believe the GoldDust is required for the South Bounds, only.  It is reflected on the current track file.

Thanks.

The Live Tracker does not show the Gold Dust, it has the valley route through Selkirk and then heading up instead of using the zig zag to get to Boreas Pass. I did not even know that was possible, must have a look.

Agree with the tinidazole, but I generally avoid Cipro during athletic events because of the incidence of tendon rupture...supposed to be more of a problem for pediatric patients, but we have seen several now in adults. Bactrim (trimethoprim/sulfa) is a good choice, would cover respiratory as well as wound infections.  Or Keflex, but qid dosing is a problem on the trail.

Hi All,

For those who rode last year, we are having a get together on Wednesday evening at 18:30 at the Balkan restaurant which is on the main street (south side) not to far from the YMCA (http://www.banffbalkan.ca). So far we've five confirmed but would love have others join as well. If you want some fun reminiscing drop me a note and I'll add you to the reservation - or just come by.

Billy's tracker is now working again and he is almost near the turnoff to Radium. I heard he got his bike fixed so that it can keep up with his body!
He has posted a few videos and pics on his facebook page.

Does anyone know where and when we pick up our SPOT tracker if we ordered a rental from Trackleaders? Usually they are supposed to be picked up some where near the start of the race. I have sent a few emails to trackleaders, but haven't heard anything back for a while.

Last year Matthew sent them up to Banff with a couple of volunteers/friends and they got picked up at the Y.

Okay I won't have the new passport for three weeks need to get some docs from the military. So I am officially delaying my ITT for three weeks, Which also means I will have the new 28 pound race trike by than and hopefully the snow will have melted off some.

Is anyone else staring there ITT early July???

Do I need to buy a SPOT or does track leaders still have rentals available? I have not heard back.
