Hi All,

Ollie Whalley who won 2012 and myself will be in Washington D.C. in a week. We're catching up with Mike Kerley (2012). If anyone would like to join us for dinner in Georgetown at 19:00 drop me a note to chris [at] lpcb.org and we'll confirm the venue.  Should be a fun evening with lots of stories. Mike and Ollie are great company. If you want to ride with them I'm sure they won't mind - especially if you are a Rolhoff person. Just make sure you are fit!

In terms of aero bars, if you're tall like me (6'4") then you might have issues with getting the aero bars high enough to be comfortable.  After trying various home made remedies that didn't work that well I finally discovered the Zipp Vuka aero bars, which come with height adjustable risers and work very well.  Now I can lean forward a bit, take a nap, and keep pedaling and pedaling . . .

The Zipps look nice, same adjustability as the Profiles

Profile also offers height adjustable risers but you would need 2 sets to equal the highest Zipp

I would call it a wash and would go with best price if I was looking....

Got another question for you guys. I would like to compare my gear list to as many others as possible. I have really liked combing through yours Chris. Does anyone have a link to TD specific gear lists of the past or even ones for this year? I've been reviewing all of last year's threads and haven't found too many yet.

It all worked pretty well for me. Next time I would only make some minor changes like:

- full size frame bag with hydropack and one large bottle on the downtube instead of camelbak with 3l bladder and two bottles on the frame (this change would only be to get more weight off my back and butt)
- seal skinz waterproof all weather cycle gloves instead of Gore softshell gloves
- probably a thudbuster seatpost - I am currently testing but can't say nothing yet)

Altogether I didn't miss anything and used everything besides the bearspray :-) Have fun!

Alum is going to be less $, a bit more robust but heavier than carbon...so you get to pick your compromises, Ha--just like with all gear choices

Oddly enough, if you look at the weight differences on the T2+ and T3+ aero bars, the aluminum ones are actually quite a bit lighter. Probably due to the molded hand grips on the carbon ones.

Vol 5 of The Cordillera (from the 2013 TD) has a gear survey as the last chapter. It's well worth perusing.

Hi all,
I know this isn't the gear forum but notice alot of gear discussion for TD takes place here.
Just from a vet's perspective, would focus your energy on training 95% and gear 5%. My Top 3 value-delivering gear things are stay long on your Lighting System (you will ride way more at night than you're used to/think), Sanitation (bottom wipes and creme) and Gloves (bring much warmer than you think). 
The aero bars thing for example is overused, would ignore it. You can generate a nice comfy laying-down position by placing $5 worth of pipe foam between your grips and centerbar. You won't be mainly pedaling hard enough to profit pulling & shifting on aero bars like in a road time trial. Most of the time after 3 days your pedaling is a diesel-mode whimper rather than what you're used to after 5 hours and feeling good on a local trail. The primary benefit of laying down is therefore resting your neck and changing your position. Use others for input, but find what's right for you. Do it your own way (thanks Wonder Pets).

Training. Training. Training. Without having that you will not be able to handle the race. Even with lots of training, I think most of us suffer for the first week or so then the body adapts to the new reality. I adapted Jesper Bondo's 16 week training program (www.training4cyclists.com) as the basis for my last 4 months, and am using the same again for this year's Transcontinental Race.

Yes, one can obsess too much over gear. As an anally retentive geeky civil engineer I'd be up towards the top for that. In the end you want to find what works for you and your goals. I placed a huge emphasis on recovery so I took a one person tent. I also used a Thudbuster since that allowed me to ride longer. I remember Peter Haile was amazed that I could last so many hours on a bike - yes, but I was also light years slower than him! I found the aero bars indispensable for stretching my back and relaxing a bit.  By now you should have decided on your gear and setup. Just run with that and refine it as necessary over the next few months. And take Mike Kerley's (2012) advise. Once you have your final setup packed, get rid of 1/3.

Trying to figure out the issue of getting my bike up to CA. I had already booked my flight out of Yuma, AZ which is a very small airport. I was told today by U.S. Airways that any of the dimensions of the bike box could not exceed 33" and the max total dimensions could not exceed 99"...

Tanman1337 - Just spoke with United Airlines on the issue with the CRJ jet and bike boxes.  I am flying on the CRJ-700 from WY to Calgary and they said the box may not exceed 43" x 33" in width and height.  Length was not an issue for a bicycle.  My brother also used to fly a CRJ and he said it shouldn't be a problem, unless it is the CRJ-50.  That is just what I have learned.  US Airways may have a separate policy and plane than United.  Good luck!  See you in Banff.
