Just thought I would translate a little for Josh... His cell seems to be not working so well.  He did stop for pie, and said thanks for the free pie.  Also mentioned the other restaurant in town and says they have good food for re-supply.  I am pretty sure he said he got three pieces as JP and Neil passed through without stopping for theirs, but maybe they went to the other restaurant? Oh well, if they didn't stop more for Josh!  I hope it carries him through to Antelope Wells!

I don't like to see much of a sleep dep contest at the finish (or even elsewhere). Nor do I like to hear about skipping pie. C'mon! To make a massive horse-race more massive they should mellow out on the dep and stick to the hammer. (Unless they really do get in a groove and don't need it now and just plain don't wanna be layin around wastin time.) All 3 should get 5 hours then hammer down. C'mon! No skippin or sneakin!

Would you really get any sleep the last night if you are lying there wondering what the other guy is doing?  I wonder if the sleep deprivation is just going to happen anyway and you might as well be moving towards your goal as long as you're not sleeping.

if you're "at the front" with something like this at stake.....there is no sleeping for very long.  if at all!  Time to press on boys and girls.  The faster you go the quicker you are done (and can sleep).......

Pretty much what I was thinking too. No matter how tired you are at this point, are you going to sleep if the other front-runners aren't? Cram your feedbag full of 5-Hour Energies and git it done!

Sounds as though spectators will be at finish? Is there an official line?

These guys are always at the border this time of year

Neil is using a 1x11 with a 34 tooth chainring (he explains it at 2:15 in the video on our mag) - and he's rocking it! http://bikepackersmagazine.com/tour-divide-rig/

We are lucky over here, our main events have a compulsory 6 hour stop-moving per 24 hours rule. Hammer time when you get up ! Each to his own I guess.

Ghost of JayP is currently sitting in 6th. Totally unreal. I'm going to wake up, and this race is going to be finished. I swear it just started, and when it started, it started in Canada.

I hope they slow down a bit and are blazing mega watt lights. They are in a treacherous area for descending even in the day time. Very, very difficult at night. My recall is some badly washboarded road on the steep segments with several tight turns.  Then the CDT to come with basketball sized rocks hidden in tall grass and a ride along a ridge. Hope to see three dots out front still moving in the morning.

Mutual stop in the dirt at 12. Josh 7 miles to catch up as of 20 after midnight. Latest rumor is the all three had pie yesterday.

It's just gone zero dark thirty and the top three are settling in for a long nights ride. With Josh just tracking 20 miles behind them I don't think they'll stop for a sleep and let him get into the mix. Josh will also ride through I guess as there is not enough road left for him to catch them on the bike now - he's 20 miles behind with 200 miles to go and he's not going to be able to ride 10% faster than the two front runners.

Alex Harris and Dylan Taylor are going to have an interesting ride in to the finish also between the two of them also it seems.

EDIT: ... proved wrong above as Jay and Neil have stopped for some shut-eye. Glad I'm in on a good timezone to see what happens through the night!

Will be interesting to see if the 12 mile section from the Sapillo cg has any effect.  It is quite rough and slow going until you get back onto pavement - though JP will know what is coming.  Once back on pavement it is fast going to the border.

If sleep deprivation was in the Olympics, Dylan would surely make the podium!

Fun watching Josh catching up right now. That extra piece of pie is paying dividends.
