Hi Lindsey.  I'm sticking around today/tonight/as long as I need to, to get those photos of Neil and Jay and hopefully all the way to Alex Harris.  Keep your fingers crossed they don't spend hours at dinner and arrive here after 9 pm.  :-)

I would love to see the pictures, and maybe post them to Bikepackers Magazine's social media if given the permission. Please email me at lindsay@bikepackersmagazine.com!  Thank you!

Looks like Larry Bennett crossed the Canadian border on a different route. His track does not seem to follow a navigable route. Maybe a Gps error? Or a bear got his Spot!

Lindsay, spoke to Neil before he left and YES you have permission for the MAG to steal photos from the forum and if you need larger size I can send them directly.  Just let me know!

That's an interesting fact. I can't see how Jefe was doing that with the weather the race had. I think you're correct though. So many guys running hard this year makes it look so much faster.

What I find crazy is if you look at the "projected" times, there are some really respectable times for nearly half the field. Super entertaining to watch this year.
I wonder if they're keeping some powder dry for the conditions in Colorado and the second half of the race.

I always think in terms of running negative splits but I don't know if that works in a race of this length.

Jay P and Neil B have come in together and left together from Ovando Montana, leaving at approx 6:25 pm after scarfing down some quick food and sodas.  Here are their first photos.  They were met by two ladies from Adventure Cycling and a family of 8 out of Alaska who are doing the Divide Trail and staying the night.  What took this family 2 weeks to do, Jay and Neil made it in 2 days and 10 hours.  Freaking crazy.

They don't know if they will stop in Lincoln til they get there.  Inquired about 3rd and 4th place, Alex Harris and the JP ghost.

Jay says he is feeling strong.

Lindsay:  Neil says he loves you and is feeling really good!

Waiting for the next 2 or 3 since Alex looks to have really pushed the pedal to the metal.
More photos of them coming!

Carry on!

Need to remember that the race is less than three days old.  People and bikes are still relatively fresh and the good weather has helped a lot.  But before long things like fatigue, weather, navigation errors, planning errors, mechanicals, mentals, you name it will start to happen to everybody to some extent and you'll see a lot of those projected times start to fall in line with something that looks reasonable.  That'll take a while.  Meanwhile, the field seems to be in pretty good shape.  Huge contrast to last year when everybody was so cold, wet and miserable and many bikes were beginning to fail from day one.  There's a loooong way to go.

Sebastian Dunne of Australia arrived into Ovando at approx 7:30 with Connor O'Leary of Utah about 5 minutes behind him.  Photos pending as soon as I get home.  Once again I will miss Alex Harris.  Such is life but I have someone hopefully to take photos.

Note Connor has a leg problem:  "Really messed up!" were his exact words if I'm not mistaken.

Too bad.  They were doing great.

They are off to Trixi's for nourishment.

Back with photos soon.

Carry on!

Interesting bike JayP is rolling this year.  That frame's not a regular Salsa production bike.  It's not a Warbird and they don't yet make a non-fat bike carbon hardtail.  Huh?

Well there it is.  A bike designed just for this race.  JP looks to be on his way to selling a lot of them for Salsa.  There's no option to run a Rolhoff (me) or single speed on it but unless you want that it looks like a pretty thought out rig.  Good thing they made the front triangle so big.  That's the biggest limitation of the Fargo, especially in a smaller frame size (mine).  Frame bag zipper was hosed by Colorado from forcing too many gas station hoagies, etc. into too small a bag.

Howdy All,

Ovando is gearing up for the first of the riders to be arriving today.  With the projection into Lincoln in about 13 hours or so, we are trying to determine when they will be arriving Ovando.  For those in the know:  How long is the rider between Ovando and Lincoln.

Don't want to miss these guys photo opp!
Thanks!

Been waiting for the racers to get to Ovando so I could see some pics.  icon_biggrin

Always know we can count on you guys for great racer pics! Keep up the great work Angler, et al!

Just a quick shout out to everyone racing, especially my man Ryan Correy and our friend, Jim Trumpey (67 years old and the most awesome guy ever!).

Curious to see how the night will unfold for Ryan, since it looks like he will be hitting Ovando when everything is closed. I imagine he will need to restock but won't be keen on waiting until everything opens again in the morning.  In 2012, he hit Ovando after hours too, spent the night hungry camped out behind the Post Office... I was hoping this wouldn't be the case again this year Smiley

Is Jim Trumpey the oldest rider? I'm rooting for the 50+ women and the 60+ men. You show the youngsters of the world how it's done!

FOUND

Bike computer - SERFAS Level 1.1

Found by TD racer from Sacramento (possibly William Scheel?) on Goat Creek Trail, approx. 44 minutes / 8.6 miles into the race according to info on computer.
He left computer at Boulton Creek Store, where I picked it up.
PM me to let me know if it's yours (or know who lost it), I'll mail it back to you.  icon_biggrin

Cheers!
