Ooh, lead change for the women. Alice Drobna and Bethany Dunne have both passed Lael Wilson.

Pretty close, Mike.
Yellow pause icon = unit stopped for 30 min. Green play icon = unit restarted after a 30 min pause. Red Power icon = unit turned off.
However, only Trace units give the the Pause and Power signals. They are not computed by us, but are actual messages that the Trace units themselves send out and we are just displaying. Gen3 units will give Play signals showing a restart, but do not send Pause and Power, unfortunately.
Both Trace and Gen3 units can have a tracking interval anywhere from 2.5 to 30 minutes. Most people have 10 min. All our rentals are at 5 min tracking -- both Trace and Gen3. Blue diamonds mean the racer has a Trace. White is everything else, including Gen3.
Another tracking note, thanks to Eszter noticing they were missing, I added the nighttime bars to the raceflow graph. It's a nice way to see who's riding late and getting up early. Also shows the division of days nicely.
The dots are setting the route on fire this year! Very cool to see.
Like the Red Lantern dot as well.

Looks like the leaders are at High Country lodge. This about the same time as Jefe passed by last year and he didn't stop. I know because ITT Bill Peschka was eating breakfast there at the time. Bill is a day or so ahead of last years pace. Having trouble with spot batteries this year so not sure where he is. He did call last night close to Lima. Said the mud was bad.

Unfortunately, it sounds like Lael has been having breathing issues for the last couple of days and plans to get it checked out in Helena. Read it here: https://gypsybytrade.wordpress.com/Even with the issue, she is hanging right with Alice and Bethany. Hopefully it's nothing serious and she can recover on the bike. Go Lael, I'm pulling for you!

Label's issues sound very much like mine in 2013, especially the worsening throughout the day. I got some Claratin in Helena and was flying again within an hour.
Good luck Lael.

Good luck, Lael. Similarly, I had illness issues that persisted for first seven days, took some short days and hotel rest, and then ... could be just me, but there's something magical about getting South of Wise River and Polaris ... Medicine Lodge they call it ... just sayin'.

It's pretty stinking awesome to see four women riding well ahead of the 20 day flag. I think it's fair to say that this is one of the best women's fields that has come together for this race in the history of ever.
Also interesting to note that the leading women don't seem to be riding together at all while JayP and Neil seem to be pretty content covering milage side by side and increasing their lead on the rest of the field. Time will tell how long that truce will last...

Awesome! exactly what I came on here to type. Both women's and men's races seem highly competitive this year thus far. Fun to watch.

Arrived a bit early this morning to start catching the groups that arrived between 10 pm and 3 am and to try to catch a photo of the Ladies. Didn't work out as planned as the girls were outta here at first light. Totally bummed. Here is the look of Ovando before all the business open at 7 and the blood starts circulating on the riders who spent the night

More photos from Ovando Montana, the early hours. The rest of the photos will not be in any particular order. But after the group post breakfast photo we have:
Anthony Beatty of California and Eijai Oxford of Good Old Billings MONTANA, individual and together as they are traveling as a pair after meeting up recently. The friendships that are being made here is incredible!
Carry on and more to come soon

Great photos as always, Angler.
Interesting to see the difference in the amount of gear carried by Eijai and Anthony.

Once the leaders are down out of Beaverhead Deerlodge NF it'll be a drag race to Wyoming. Just a couple of passes but decent, flattish roads. If they stay dry enough that is. Otherwise (except the service road into Lima) this will be miles of sticky clay. Great when it's dry, though. Bill Peschka seems to have run into the mud there yesterday.

Hi everyone. I am absolutely loving this years TD. However... I have a question that I'm sure many of you may have already considered. What do you think about the use of drop bars and cyclocross bikes in what is considered a mountainbike race? I don't know what the situation is in the US but here in the UK you are not allowed to enter MTB races using cyclocross bikes. Equally I would believe that the use of drop bars would also be frowned upon. Please don't shoot the messenger here, I think that I am asking a valid question and I am interested in hearing other peoples opinions. Thanks. Neil.

More photos of Ovando entries. And departures.
Unfortunately 2 people zipped thru town without a glance or a slow down so didn't get their photos: Sarah Jenson and Patrick Dowd.
Stand by plenty more to come and I'll probably run out of bandwidth!
Carry on!

Others will probably have different opinions, but I don't really see the TD as a 'Mountain Bike' race, just a bike race. As such, I think people should be allowed to ride whatever bike they think will work best for them. Drop bars, riser bars, Jones bars, whatever works. 4" tires, 3" tires, 35mm tires, whatever works! I kind of like that fact that you can use whatever equipment you see fit to use. One thing I find interesting is the almost universal use of aero bars, those probably would be frowned upon in your average mountain bike race!

I think the type of race this is leads many to the user of cross bikes and drop bars. And you're seeing drop bars more and more on mountain bikes where bikepacking is intended. You're starting to see more "gravel grinder" bikes that are essentially cross bikes as well. Here in the U.S. it seemed to be a bigger issue in XC racing but for bikepacking many seem to prefer them and it's accepted, for the most part.
