In hotel room--Achilles is now 'squeaky' and bumpy as well as swollen Any way it could improve? Ice elevation as we speak Any other suggestions?
Marshal - I don't have any ultra-distance experience but I injured my Achilles thirty-odd years ago and it flares up from time to time. The thing that helps me most is getting my foot further forward on the pedal than many cleated shoes allow, which reduces the strain on the Achilles. I don't recall your setup (single-sided SPDs maybe?) but if you're using cleated shoes you could try changing to flat pedals (and suitable shoes if necessary) so you can get that pedal back towards your heel. All the best - you're an inspiration to those of us in the over-50 ranks.

Mike Hall reached Como on Saturday Evening, I thought we have had another Saturday arrival?
JayP came through Sunday Lunchtime.
The latest a leader has come through was Monday lunchtime.
Interesting observations Dave @ Como Luxury Resort [cough] Running a quick 2013 replay and merging with 2015 times and JP's 2012 Flag [which just arrived Como at 3.00am] looks a bit like this.... 2013 Mike Hall - Saturday 10.30pm 2015 JayP - Sunday Noon Neil B - 2.45pm Josh K - 3.45pm Seb D - 5.00pm Dylan T & Alex H 8.00pm 2nd 2013 Jessie Carlsson 'sparkled' through @ 8.00pm JayP 2012 Record - Monday 3.00am So in summary, plenty of depth and great racing from the current top six ..... but well short of Mike Hall's phenomenal pace set in 2013. Let's not forget he rode as far as Helena with some serious respiratory issues.

I get the feeling that this is going to come down to whoever can put in the longest sleepless ride to the border. Is 36hrs feasible at the end of a race like this? 48 hrs?
Neil made up an hour on the bike between Hartsel and Salida, so he clearly still has the legs at this stage.

Marshal you are a real inspiration as Cranky and others have said. Looks like your out on route again. Hoping the Achilles issues do not worsen and strong tailwinds to AW.

Marshall
Stretch well - Wall push and heel drop, Hams also Tape the heels - Kinesio Drop the saddle (1/4 inch) +NSAID for pain relief and circulation
...and you can recover in the saddle
Best of luck
Mike

Make sure your saddle isn't too high. Try lowering it just a hair to eliminate subconsciously wanting to tippy-toe the pedals. Relax the calves and let your ankles move freely as you push/pull on the pedals (constantly putting tension on the calves as if you were standing on your tippy toes will over stress the achilles).

Don't think there's a list on TL, you have to do the leg word to click on each rider name or dot get their age. As far as I can tell the 60+ pack is lead by Robert Orr, followed by Mitchell Potter.
Just noticed that Marshal has an unofficial list of riders over 50 on his blog: http://bikedrifting.blogspot.com/2015/05/race-within-race.html

Been following this discussion the whole race, but figured now is a good time to chime in. With the heat coming in New Mexico, will be interesting to see how Neil handles it. I know he said he struggled with the heat during the Stagecoach race earlier this year. ( http://bikepackersmagazine.com/thoughts-on-the-stagecoach-400/) Perhaps the experience will help him this time around. Excited to see how all of the top guys handle the heat. Just hope they all stay safe out there!

+1 to all this especially the kinesio tape. One thing I didn't see noted: find a cylinder (water bottle, bottle of coke, etc) and roll your calf with it foam-roller style. You need to get it to relax a bit to stop pulling on the tendon. See http://blog.nasm.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/Figure2.jpg for illustration.

The drain on your body in those conditions goes up exponentially. What a race!! so many races within the race.

2013 Mike Hall - Saturday 10.30pm 2015 JayP - Sunday Noon Neil B - 2.45pm Josh K - 3.45pm Seb D - 5.00pm Dylan T & Alex H 8.00pm 2nd 2013 Jessie Carlsson 'sparkled' through @ 8.00pm JayP 2012 Record - Monday 3.00am

This is a nice analysis, thanks. Add to this that ML has run a few numbers (estimates at best) for JP on the new routes: The Fish Creek section (Union Pass) was 35 minutes longer than the old route. The Wamsutter route was 4 hours faster. This is comparing 2015 JP to 2012 JP. Multiply by some factor to get estimates for slower riders. So it would seem Mike was riding *significantly* faster still. He didn't warm up with ITI and AZT750, though... Oodles of great racing going on out there. Heat could be the biggest thing to mix things up in the coming days. It's been quite warm even at 9000 feet in Colorado.

Robert rode in 2013 with a friend who wasn't as fast as he was and then Robert got stopped in Pinedale to deal with a leg (Achilles or knee I think) for 1.5 days. Then he took off and finished in 23 days. It looks like he is on pace for an 18 day finish at the moment. He is definitely amazing! I'm more impressed though when the younger folks are going so fast as I think it takes a lot of mental toughness and experience to be a good divide rider. I was better @ 54 than I would have been @ 24. Both are pretty cool!
