Just wanted to throw this out there. I'm not a Salsa owner or in any way associated, but I am an engineer. You can't thread carbon. In order to have threaded BB in a carbon frame, they have to epoxy a chunk of metal to the carbon so that chunk of metal can be threaded..... which has it's own set of difficulties. It just makes sense for a frame manufacturer to make a carbon frame with pressed BB rather than spending the time and resources dealing with trying to glue and machine a threaded insert into the frame. Especially a manufacturer small enough to devote their time to developing a bike for a race that only has a little over 100 people toe the line! It allows them to focus on their geometry and layup and trust that the BB manufacturers will do their homework. And if they were to have made it a threaded BB, we would probably have another group of people complaining cause they think pressed BB is better. Now lets get back to the race. Can't help but root for the come from behind victories! I rode with Dylan on the AZT750 until he left me in the dust, so I know that dude has some good after burners if he puts them on in time.

The BB you're referring to was mine, Michael_S, and to be clear it did not fail. After 200ish miles, my Cutthroat developed a squeak while pedaling like none of the five of us had ever heard. Took the crank off to inspect, nothing was amok, and when we reinstalled, the squeak was gone. BB (PF41, not PF30 as some have said) was fine.
Having ridden the Cutthroat for three days, and with plenty of bikepacking and thru-racing experience to my name, I can say that Salsa has built an excellent bike. Perhaps not to everyone's liking, but no single bike will ever accomplish that. Rather than worrying about whether Salsa wants to co-opt the TD (they don't) or question their marketing intentions (these are good guys motivated by building good bikes that they want to ride), I think everyone should step back and recognize that it's super cool that a company of their size is working hard to serve what amounts to a very small niche in the cycling market.
One of the riders on a Cannondale had the same issue. His pressed in bearings were creating a creak. A Cannondale rider told him not to worry, it was nothing he hadn't seen before. And to my knowledge he's still out there. That said, creaks drive me crazy. I'd avoid a pressed in BB for that reason. Not because it's inferior but because I can't un-hear that sound. OTOH, I'm not likely to own a carbon MTB. FWIW, I'm glad to see Salsa looking at the TD with respect enough to want to target a bike to it!

Well said. I agree that this tiny niche isn't being marketed to very aggressively. As it grows, so will the availability of purpose built product. This will build loyalty and even possibly have many look at switching brands.

What's the elevation up there at the train station? Its 9800' where the train crosses the highway then about 15-20 mile downhill to Chama NM Now lets get back to the race.
I second that

Wow! Gone for a few hours and Josh Kato puts the hammer down. I thought he was an hour behind? He is picking up ground on the pavement.

Hopefully there won't be a string of people coming to the finish line holding hands! Gotta have a definitive conclusion to this race!

I would love to see a legitimate, three way, record-breaking tie. Reminds me of this year's Iditarod Trail Invitational.
That would seriously be mythological.

Just can't believe what I'm seeing. Has JK been holding a bit in reserve? How close can this really stay? I don't buy the three amigos going across together. This is a record run not likely to be repeated soon, someONE wants his name on it. Much can still happen but this is extraordinary.

I would expect a real race to the finish. I think they'll sleep some tonight but with three guys this close I wouldn't expect any more sleep from the eventual winner after tonight.
