If you look at the race flow plots, it almost looks like Neil and Jay decided to let Josh go.  Josh's pace seems uniform and theirs drops off together.

I hope not also. Knowing how hard and how far he rode last year with a broken bone & a tree limb stuck in his leg, I don't think he went too early.
87, or less, miles to go.

They are going for it!!! After 14 days of hard riding they are putting everything they've got into closing this out. Josh has put in an awesome come from behind ride to hit the lead in the last hours of the last day. Incredible stuff. He was up 4miles, now 6 miles ... and now Neil and JayP are going to have to respond soon or that gap is going to be too much to drag in.

It is so cool that this is a no-drafting race. GO GO GO.

Away from the front it looks like Seb Dunne is on the move again.

They've got 3 or 4 miles of fairly deep sand just before Separ and a few miles of dirt along I-10 then it's all pavement.  Who's got the most leg left?  Just amazing ride this year by all the front runners.  It's too bad only one can win, but hey, that's racing.  I don't see this finishing in a side by side by side group.

With all the excitement from The Three Amigos, the remainder of the race has definitely taken back seat.  I'm sure there are some epic personal battles going on behind.  Kudos to all who are out there giving it a go.

Neil and JayP are probably letting Josh go ahead with the idea of letting him get ahead of himself or burn out so they can reel him in. Risky. The dark horse might pull this off.  Even if not, JK has pulled off THE ride of the year period. Even if he comes in 3rd, which is amazing, I think his narrative far exceeds whatever JayP or Neil accomplish (both of whom have produced stellar performances)  I just read Kato's blog about his 2014 TD DNF and to see him come back and then be out front. This is the stuff that makes the TD amazing.

I totally agree.  From that moment at 7 days 10 hours 50 minutes when he broke away from Dylan and joined Neil and JayP he has absolutely crushed it!

I would love to know what was/is going through Kato's mind throughout the race. AMAZING!

Josh has made a break on the last of the dirt. Positions came in 1 minute apart. Josh is about 6 miles ahead.
Go JOSH!

I apologize for being late with my old news about Josh. That happens when you're attempting to get some work done at work. I should have been paying closer attention to the important things.
I read Josh's account of TD 2014 back in January. I was dumbfounded! Gobsmacked as they say.
Rock on Josh!

Josh is on a Fargo is he not? Wouldn't that be a beautiful statement? The old Salsa beating the new Salsa tour divider.  What an incredible race! So inspiring for me to actually finish it next year.

I couldn't imagine letting the break go in a race like this be a strategic move. Not in a race where there's no drafting, where it's "officially" a time trial, on bikes that are probably pretty detuned at this point, while going on a record run, where the amount of things that COULD go wrong are great. No way. Could you imagine letting someone go, then getting a flat? If Neil and JayP's strategy is to hold some for the end, and Kato's is to burn every single match left, I doubt either is in a strategic move against another rider.

The actual story is going to be great.

Yes. Josh & Val got Ti Fargos for the TD 2014. Josh built/assembled most of both bikes. It's all at Far Out Wanderings. I assume Josh is on the same bike this year. Salsa should be signing them to a sponsor deal.

I was driving from Cortez, CO. to Denver and missed a morning group at Del Norte, but came across Doug Wenger heading up to Marshall Pass. I took a few pics and spoke briefly with him. He sounded good, in good spirits, and said it was his first hot day (he thought).

Sad that there isn't live video coverage of this! Or is there...... (wishful thinking) What a fantastic rolling drama. Each of the riders doing the route is a winner in my book. Just amazing. Can't wait to hear what each of the top 3 have to say when this is all over. I personally would have loved to see a 3 way tie. Just a fitting end to all the drama. But I don't think we'll be getting that. Seems that there was no gentleman's agreement:-) and the race was on after silver city.

It looks like the gap is now 9 miles.  Can they catch him?  It's going to be tough if they don't start reeling him in soon.  I can't wait to hear all the stories after it's over.
