among others ... it looks like Hal Russell finished a little after 2 this morning.  Followed shortly by Jen Marsh a little after 5 am.  Both beating the 30 day mark.

Great job, Hal.  Chalk one up for the Old Guys!

On behalf of the supporting partners, thank you everyone! We were able to be at the finish line to greet Peter, John, Hal and Jen...as well as their support team! It was an early morning party! I am so impressed with the online watchers, MTB cast, this forum and all of the others along the way and in the wings, who make this event happen for all of the racers. It is the experience of a lifetime and one we will all remember fondly! Nancy

I haven't seen Team Rice Burner mentioned in a bit. My favorite racers, with a strong media coordinator/stoker ;-)

For what appears to be some epic late-race drama, check out their (hilarious) videos at https://www.facebook.com/Riceburner and their (tenacious) progress on http://trackleaders.com/tourdivide15i.php?name=Team_Rice_Burner.

It seems they are essentially walking the Gila courtesy of monsoon mud. AFAICT, been in there for ~3-4 days so far. Their last videos I suppose were posted when they backtracked 7 miles for a second visit to Pie Town. I'm eagerly awaiting more once they finally emerge again. An astonishing duo!

Around 99.5% are using 29 inch tires.  Probably 95% tubeless.

Nope - an observation.

As Bob said, most people were on something around a 2.1 - 2.3. I saw maybe 3 or 4 bikes with 29+ tires, and about 3 - 4 bikes running 40 - 42c tires.

My opinion - 3.0 tires with the right air pressure might have been more comfortable over some sections of rough road, but the only bike they really made sense on for the race (TO ME) was the tandem due to the extra weight of the bike and two people. If I were touring the route, I'd give them serious consideration just for the extra comfort over the months (I'd also take a spare tire with me too).

There is the 27.5 plus in a 29er frame option. The WTB 27.5x2.8 would fit in most frame. but have mud clearance issues in XC style bikes.
IMO its a better option on the trail races (AZT & CTR)

For the GDMBR a 27.5 would have the same issue that a 29r had a few years back - no replacement tires readily available.  29r tires are now getting more common; I think I heard someone say they've even seen them at Wal-Mart?

Go Team Rice Burner. Glad to see you heading to the finish after days of walking and pushing.
I was curious about the team so looked up Billy Rice and this ain't his first rodeo: http://www.invictuscycling.com/articles/half-past-done-billy-rice/
Nontheless, what a great effort and super kudos to Lina.

I'm riding a 27.5 in 2016 so I hope there's something in stock at Orange Peel in Steamboat Springs or Absolute Bikes in Salida.

Same here Dave, worst case stick a whole 26" or 29" wheel in.

Orange Peel and Absolute are pretty complete shops.

Well its old news by now, but Team Rice Burner finished their days-long Manga Mud walk and are on the highway to the border. Seriously - check out their latest FB posts - https://www.facebook.com/Riceburner

Lina Rice while tromping though the mud: (looks ahead at dad pushing mud-buried tandem, down at own feet) "...my feet are pretty bad too." Looks wistfully back up and says quietly "its all bad..." (tromps on, end of video).

And then this post - "Thinking about walking the last 70 just because it seems right"

Hilarious to the end! Sign me up for the superfan club.
