I've heard some of the single-track through NM is pretty technical. Is Mike through that already, or is it coming up, crossing the Gila?
The section that he's about to get to now,  from Sapillo Campground (from Hwy 35) to Pinos Altos is pretty technical.  After that nothing technical at all.

I would think so.  It may be going on sunset when he comes down into Pinos Altos, but that's not the hard part.

I'm not much of a technical rider but when it's dark and I'm tired it's even worse.  I've hike a biked that section twice, now.

Dark technical riding is where the fun begins! Keeps you on your toes, if not... on your face Wink

You think he'll be under 13d 20h? It'll be close. Get it Mike!

i agree with you as far as i'm concerned i dosn't matter if i rip a derailer off or break a wheel on a night ride, i'll just walk home. but if it happened after 2500 miles within sight of the end it would be so gutting. i think its a bit too far to finish in under 14 days i think he will need an hour or two over that, but what do i know.

Kudos to Pavel Macháček, of the Czech Republic, who went off route to Del Norte (had to fix something?) then back to where he left the route and is now plugging away. I just finished a long bike tour in his country, which is a great place to ride! Bike paths everywhere.

I think what appeals to me most is that someone looked at the route and thought...hmm, that's not enough of a challenge....I think i'll do it on a bike without gears....

Great stuff!

If you talk to single speeders, it is unlikely you will find this as a reason, i.e. "not enough of a challenge".  More likely, the common response will be closer to "I like riding a single speed, and I like pushing myself and my boundaries using my preferred bike".  The same reason that people choose to push their boundaries on geared bikes, also their bikes of choice

That particular technical single track is not fun at all. With 2500 miles in the legs it is sheer torture and forces many a rider shed a tear. I am almost finished my CDT counselling sessions...... sad2

On another note- Go Mike!! It is all downhill (almost) fromSilver City!

Quote
The first person to complete the route on a SS was Kent Peterson. When he pulled into Whitefish early in the race a couple of the racers that had gotten there ahead of him said, "We didn't think you would make it."

Also worth noting: Kent rode to the start in Roosville from his home near Seattle, on the same bike he used for the race.

Looks like Mike is in Silver City now. Is he at McDonalds???

Looks like he has 12 hours to do 125 miles. I feel like he can do sub 14, especially if its mostly downhill from Silvercity!

I wonder how many hours of tracking his SPOT will drop as he makes his run in those last 12 hours. Don't know why these things can't be made more reliable. If they could be, Blue Dot watching would be really exciting and even more addicting.

less than 100mi to go now for Mike.  He has 9.5hrs now to get in under 14 days!  damn, this is impressive.

It's full gas now - à bloc

Allez Mike!
