I may have missed an earlier post or two... I see it looks like Joe Fox has scratched.. Anyone know how he is?
Rode so strong last year and went out fast this year...

At the front of the race, Chris Plesko and Mike Hall continue to really ride impressively. Chris is riding at a pace probably 3 days ahead of his 2009 ride!

Awesome to see a SS and a geared rider way up there. Reminds a bit of watching 2011's race hey Kurt Wink

Aboslutely not.  The Lauf is amazing!  If anything it saved me from a few crashes already when I was "sightseeing" and not paying attention to rocks/roots or whatnot.  It's an ideal type of fork for this race.  It matches the vibration reduction system in the Salsa Cutthroat frame suberbly.  I have NEVER been more comfortable on a bike in a gravel type ride than I was on this one.  The Lauf/Cutthroat combination is really awesome.  Some sections of chundery descents were soooo much more confortable than the last 2 years.  I'll be using Laufs in the future I can assure you.
Great to Hear Josh.  I was a littler concerned after reading the bits and pieces of your incident and also the review from MTBR mag wasn't very complimentary...  Ride On!

It looks like Mike Hall has finally found a bed and checked into Lava Mountain Lodge. He is at least half a day in front of Josh's flag from last year. It is going to be interesting to see if he can sustain the pace for another week.

More from Ovando this evening Jun 15:

-  Christina Nacos of Colorado.  She would like to let people know she has had a tough go of it on retaining items on her bike.  The blue bag that was found on the trail has been returned to her today.  However she is missing a vest and most importantly her I-PHONE!  In a black case.  If anybody knows of anybody that has found one or has had one turned in please let me know as I have information to return it to her.  Thank you.

-  Don Schwieters of Tx.

-  Lane Bergen of Nebraska

-  Robert Eiserman of Virginia

And now the bad news:  Somehow due to operator error many of today's photos were erroneously deleted.  From Mark Witcher's celebration over being rescued on the road toward Huckleberry Pass by a driver who drove him back to Ovando, where he received a 29" tire that had been left for good luck two years prior, which allowed Mark to remain in the Race; and his wearing a USMC cycle jersey in honor of his son who was shot in Afghanistan ..... to the return of Hal Russel and the joyous selfies ....... to Zane DeDecker's tearful photo due to accidental discharge of his bear spray ..... to Troy Cowin and  Jesse Ramsey's discussion on the best way to race with long hair; pony tail, bun or just cut it..... and I'm mad about it.  They have to be somewhere and hopefully I'll find them hidden in cyberspace somewhere and still post.

Until then,
carry on!

Hey thanks AB. There are some golden oldies in the Red Rock TD photo gallery! Names that are TD folklore.

...Meanwhile Mike McElveen is still showing as in Helena. I hope he is ok as he was smashing it.

Yup, those photos are "history" now! Especially the one with Scott Felter -- he of Porcelain Rocket (locally made) -- with a BOB trailer and absolutely no frame bags: http://photos.rvinteractive.com/Public-Galleries/Sports/Bicycling/Great-Divide-Bicycle-Race/i-Gcp4m7t . He'll never live that one down. icon_biggrin

I sure hope Mike is still in the game. It showed him at Budget Inn Express this afternoon and he looks to still be in the vicinity. Anyone know his status/troubles?

Loved to go through that photo gallery and see the evolution in bike, gear packing and cloths.

To me it seems that the percentage TD riders with a German family name is far above the US average, at least in this gallery.

Good to see a smiling pic of Christien Smeja in Ovando.  I rode with him on and off for about a week in Tour Aotearoa earlier this year and he was so much stronger than I was.  A nice guy and we talked about TD during our time together.  Good to see him moving through the field after having to get a new rear wheel in Sparwood.

I am another Lauf fork user and really like them in Tour Aotearoa.  Home to get back to TD one day (2019?) and they would be my choice of fork to take a bit of the buzz out of trails with minimal weight penalty and lack of maintenance.

Wow, hats off to Arthur Kopatsy for what looks like carbon rims, without suspension!  Wouldn't this be a risk (for a less skilled rider), in hitting a rock on a descent and breaking a rim?

An impact that would make a carbon rim unrideable would probably do just as much damage to an alu rim. I'd be more worried about the dangers of having laces on my cycling shoes!!

I my experience Carbon rims will take 3 to 5 time the abuse of an Alu & not even require a re-truing.

No wind assist across the Great Basin today:
"Breezy, with a south southwest wind around 23 mph, with gusts as high as 32 mph"
Ouch.

Here's a nice visual for the current wind conditions.

Another one I like to use for lightning strikes in real-time for when the monsoon kicks up in a bit.

I would way rather use carbon rims; stiff, light, efficient, strong.
