Continued...from Montana High Country Lodge near Polaris, MT. Every TD season we meet someone that leaves a lasting impression on us; this season was no different. So here is a little recap of Segundo Saenz and his stay at Montana High Country Lodge. On Saturday he called from Butte to see if he could have a part shipped to our lodge, it would come overnight and arrive on Monday. He road from Butte, over Fleecer mountain and the Pioneer Scenic byway on marginal functioning bike to arrive that night. He tore his bike down on Sunday to ready for the Monday morning delivery. That did not happen, nor did it in the afternoon. Oh well maybe Tuesday morning early but he contacted Amazon the check and see why it was not delivered. It was not shipped. Segundo took it with a grain of salt and had them ship the parts 2 days further down the trail, put his bike back together and departed this morning. He kind of chuckled as he was ready to leave saying "I am well rested, so I will see if I can pass some of the riders that passed me while I was down". I am sure with his calm, steady all in stride attitude he will indeed finish his ride to Antelope Wells. FYI - Photos - SS1 crank tore apart. SS departing lodge SS2 hitting a nice pace down Hyw278 SS3 getting clearance to ride through road construction before Bannack.

Dave Reeck of Washington. AKA "The Guy In Last Place" and "The Luckiest Man in the World" finally left Ovando Montana today after a 24 hours delay due to a lost wallet. Karma is with this man.
Long story long:
I dropped into Ovando yesterday just to drop off a computer, when Mr. Reeck approached and mentioned he had lost his wallet and was heading back along the route to Seeley Lake to look for it. As luck would have it, my next stop was Seeley for groceries so it just seemed natural to pile in his bike and "stuff" and take the long way back along the route. We stopped at every red object in the road. We asked every cyclist and road crew if they had seen a red wallet. Nothing. I dropped him off at his last stop in Seeley and wished him luck.
Not 20 minutes had gone by when, as luck would have it, someone at a restaurant who had a friend of someone and they had a friend who told him they had found his wallet. That person had looked him up and left a message with his wife. The wallet was in Missoula, but as luck would have it, they were on their way toward Ovando to see relatives. Both parties headed east on highway 200, and as luck would have it they both pulled into a rest stop at the same time. And Dave got his wallet back.
You couldn't write this scenario for a movie. So this morning, with red wallet firmly zipped into place, he finally was able to depart our fair township.
Good Luck Dave. Make last place proud! You and your Mr. Chicken. :-)
Last photo is of a rouge street biking couple making themselves quite at home in the cycling shelters in town.

Everybody that arrives in Ovando has their own story. We've listened to a lot of them. All are incredible! But one inspiring story is of Bonnie Gagnon of MN who arrived at 1 am this morning with her partner in crime Grant Larvick. They rousted themselves out of the Sheep Wagon around 10 am. I asked Bonnie if the traveling at night was part of their tactics, but she said 'No'.......they just kept getting later starts so kept riding later. Bonnie, for those that haven't read about her, is a survivor; of a rare and deadly disease called Lemierre's Syndrome that attacked her lungs and blood. And here she was, in "real life", chipper, smiling, laughing and enjoying every aspect of running the TDR as an ITT'er; including the blown knee she experienced one month before the Grand Departure. So here are photos of Bonnie and Grant and the special pedal assembly she has to take the stress off the right knee despite the additional energy she must expel to drive it. You can read more about her at : https://www.gofundme.com/btneftbwp.s. please notice that with each of their individual photos -- they photo bombed each other. You can't help liking these two.

And once the Race is over, you won't remember how you made it through, how you managed to survive. You won't even be sure whether the Race is really over. But one thing is certain. When you come out of the Race, you won't be the same person who rode in. That's what the Race is all about.

Yay! I saw this go down on his FB page. He was totally due for some good luck. For those that don't know, his first few days were seriously plagued by a bad tire. Pre-divide, he'd ridden quite a few miles on it so assumed it was still OK to use, but did notice one bead was a bit tighter during install than the other. Chalked it up to slight manufacturing tolerance and thought no more about it. Then on the first days of the divide he had something like 10 blowouts. The sidewall rubber of the tire was separating from the bead and letting his tubes stick way out and puncture. He used zip-ties all the way around tire/tube/rim, gorilla tape, etc to try to keep the tube contained in the tire and keep the tire tread and sidewall held down in place around the rim. Not sure where or how exactly he fixed the problem, but glad to see him moving along and glad to see some luck has found him.

On the flow chart it looks like she caught him when he was going the wrong way, then they rode together for a while, and then she rode away.

If you watch the videos on the Trans Am facebook page, after arriving at the finish Lael tells the story of her run-in with Steffen - it's worth listening to!
