Hey anyone know if there is a link to a thread where we could discuss Trans AM Race stuff and it wasn't OT? Wink

Gah, you guys, we're not allowed to get a little excited about a Tour Divide champion from last year kicking ass in another endurance race this year? It's outrageous! Tongue

As for Tour Divide racing talk then - my Australian friend Jackie is kicking ass in the female race, but it looks like she's now the only female still racing. It's not quite the same as the strong female field of last year, which was a really exciting competition to watch. But I'm still watching Jackie leapfrog to and fro with the 20 day mark, and cheering for a sub-20 day finish.

And Kiwi Brian Alder and Aussie Gary P are both doing really well in the Rookie's field (after the unfortunate drops of a few other Aussie & Kiwi racers due to dodgy knees, illness and dog bites and such).

This is only my second year to follow this event.  I'm wondering how unusual it is that with only 10 single speeders in the field two of them are currently riding 2nd and 3rd at this stage of the ride (New Mexico)? Or maybe it's not unusual at all?

Hey, gettin' kinda personal there - and it wasn't a burrito!

Lael is officially "in the family", like endurance mafia. Not OT at all to recognize a record holder! If it's purity you want, I suggest Pro Wrestling. :>

I am rooting for the 20 Day flag.........I know where it will stop each night, unlike Jackie!
I kid.  icon_biggrin I hope Jackie smashes it into the teens for her finish.

Your turn next year Megan? How is that knee?

Hi everybody, I'm new here and have only recently discovered the tour divide.
I have been following the live tracker for a the last few days now and I'm just in awe of what these guys are doing.

Then I find out that some people can do this on a singlespeed......and they are placing really high.....!!! WOW!
How can they do this? What type of gear do they run? So impressed, totally amazing and quite inspirational.

The Great Divide Race was the precursor to this race and it went down the same route except border-to-border, starting at the Port of Rooseville. The first person to complete the route on a SS was Kent Peterson. When he pulled into Whitefish early in the race a couple of the racers that had gotten there ahead of him said, "We didn't think you would make it." Now you have more that ride SS. Chris Plesko is on pace to break his own record!

I 2nd Chrisw's question. Last year, Marshal Bird (a TD veteran), who was running a 1 x 11 setup, lamented on his blog (almost to the point of depression) that he did not have enough top end for the flats or long downhill sections.

Those of us with no SS experience find this (a SS for the TD) impossible to comprehend and be competitive (yet 2nd and 3rd place as I write this are riding SS.) How is it possible to find a ratio that allows you to climb most of the grades (on a fully-loaded bike packing rig) and still have any speed whatsoever on level ground?

I know there are folks with SS TD experience here. Please explain! (Or should this be discussed elsewhere?)

Those that tackle the Divide on a singlespeed are not of this world!

But we're still waiting for someone to do it on a push bike with no crank.

I think what appeals to me most is that someone looked at the route and thought...hmm, that's not enough of a challenge....I think i'll do it on a bike without gears....

Great stuff!
