Hello! Dean Anderson's wife here. I've been asked why he's racing on a singlespeed. In addition to the lure of a personal challenge, his answer is, “It’s simpler.” Without other gears, there is less to think about because you have no choice but to go. There are fewer parts to maintain so there is less to break down. He likes the feel of the singlespeed because he feels more in tune with the ground he’s riding over. Instead of trying to match his gears to the slope, he tries to match his riding style to the ground. He likes getting aerodynamic to gain speed when approaching a climb. He knows that geared bikes are faster and that faster is good but he finds the challenge of a singlespeed more fun. He said that if he did the Tour Divide on a geared bike, he’d want to do it again on a singlespeed so he might as well get it over with now. I wondered if the opposite might be true now that he’s racing it but he said if he did it again, he would ride a singlespeed.

I believe a crew, Pivot, from AZ left y'day to pick him up.

Down to 12.5 to go with around 1 hr 45 mins. Barring some crazy mishap, he should make it with 'tens' of minutes to spare!! Go Mike!!

I'm curious to know if Mike thinks there is any more time to be shaved of this years run. I remember Matthew Lee saying number of years ago that he thought 15 days was possible, and thinking that was crazy talk! Go Mike, keep pushing to the end.

Just turned on the 'puter and see that with 1 minute in The TRD Prince of Wales, Mr. Hall,  is under 5 miles from the finish.  Can't imagine what is going thru his mind with the end so close.

There is a GREAT video (too big to post here) of the Pivot ladies passing him about 20mi from the finish on Mike's Bookface page!  He is "dying" but flying to the finish...  They have a bed set up for him in the back of the van so he can sleep on the way back to Phoenix, beer, snacks,a bunch of goodies!!

GO MIKE!!  Manimal...

You hate to turn it into a raw numbers game, but at the end of the day...

The route is ~2700 miles.  If you average 10mph, it's going to take 270 hours to complete.  10 hours of riding per day at that pace is 27 days.  20 hours is 13.5 days.

According to TL, Mike is averaging 10.6 mph (and history has shown him to be a VERY fast rider).  That means he's riding (on average) 19+ hours per day...that's a LOT.

That pace, on a (relatively) heavy mountain bike, on mostly gravel, with 190,000' of climbing, in a self-supported race, will be very difficult to beat.  Somebody either has to ride for more hours in a day or at a faster pace.  Given the body's need to recover, there isn't much room left in "riding more hours".  So somebody is simply going to have to ride it faster.

Mike has set the bar REALLY high this year.
