Continued...from Montana High Country Lodge near Polaris, MT. Every TD season we meet someone that leaves a lasting impression on us; this season was no different. So here is a little recap of Segundo Saenz and his stay at Montana High Country Lodge. On Saturday he called from Butte to see if he could have a part shipped to our lodge, it would come overnight and arrive on Monday. He road from Butte, over Fleecer mountain and the Pioneer Scenic byway on marginal functioning bike to arrive that night. He tore his bike down on Sunday to ready for the Monday morning delivery. That did not happen, nor did it in the afternoon. Oh well maybe Tuesday morning early but he contacted Amazon the check and see why it was not delivered. It was not shipped. Segundo took it with a grain of salt and had them ship the parts 2 days further down the trail, put his bike back together and departed this morning. He kind of chuckled as he was ready to leave saying "I am well rested, so I will see if I can pass some of the riders that passed me while I was down". I am sure with his calm, steady all in stride attitude he will indeed finish his ride to Antelope Wells. FYI - Photos - SS1 crank tore apart. SS departing lodge SS2 hitting a nice pace down Hyw278 SS3 getting clearance to ride through road construction before Bannack.
Russ, Thank you so much for your and Kare's hospitality. I felt at home for those two days and was able to make a good push the next couple of days because of that. FYI, the bb got just in time to Suirrel Creek Ranch and I was able to make the change with a little help from fellow rider Mark Witcher. Thanks again! Segundo |

I don't want to be a spoil sport but while he did it in less than X days he DID NOT follow the race route in many places. Notably he took the easy road around Union Pass, not the CDT alternate and the easy way around the Sapillo CDT amongst 3 or 4 others. Rule 5. TD Route: Aside from the 4 permitted deviations listed below, challengers must always ride 100% of the Great Divide ‘main route’ as denoted by the most current map edition published by ACA. For TD`13, the 2011 printing is still the most current edition. Previous map editions may not be used unless updated with the most current ACA Addenda. Addenda 'sets' are specific to each map printing edition. *Don't disqualify a perfectly good time trial simply because your maps are outdated and/or you paired them with the wrong addenda. There is a supplemental GPX file of the official TD 'race route' revised annually. Refer to it, even if not navigating by GPS. While still a huge effort to ride from Canada to Mexico, we can't compare his ride with any of the racers. (End Toby-esque rant) Great effort by Chris P. I thought I saw somewhere that he was pushing 32-16 gearing?! How did he climb those mountains? He must be an animal! |

I think Chris' ride is a clear candidate for "ride of the 2016 Tour". I expected Mike Hall to be really fast...maybe not 13.23 fast, but still...
To beat the old single-speed record by 4 days is hard for my brain to process.

Not only that as it was his own record that stood for so long which is crazy as it showed how strong it was when he first set it back in 2009. To me what's most impressive..... the 'simple' act of physically cranking a 2:1 for that long full day after full day would be so f'n hard. Anyone who's SS'ed for any period of time can attest to that. Insane effort to stay on top of it mile after mile after mile.... Also Nice work Sofiane, Kevin and Brian! great job! |
