Random race talk: It's a bad year to be a Jason, all three of them have scratched now. Same with Larry, they're both out now.
Lee Craigie posted about a severe allergic reaction holding her up - she made an alpine start to ride over Union Pass this morning, but it looks like she got a lift south to Brush Mountain Lodge this afternoon. I hope her race isn't over.
At least two of the top ten are dealing with broken bikes too - Kristin reported that "Arthur is challenged by a broken front shock, but he's going to push to Steamboat, get it fixed". Ben has a crack in his carbon frame now, but after finding nothing compatible/affordable in Breckenridge, it looks like he's pushing on!

Thanks! Hopefully his luck turns, at least this time he can still ride on it.

Ok, I really appreciate the effort that has gone into maintaining this space.... I am also really grateful for the access it provides me to some OG members of this community...(: (Hi gang!!) I keep my login current in order to not lose touch w folks....(: That said, this ongoing banter about the location of and preference for where pictures are posted...when there is an exciting race happening out there....(?) Well, it doesn't inspire forum excitement from here! I was asked by ML many MANY years ago to post photos elsewhere, due to the space they were consuming on the forum servers. So, as for many years now, I am posting my photos on my Lodge FB page... https://m.facebook.com/BrushMountainLodge/Go there, don't go there.... I don't care! Happy stalking, people!! My earlier comment regarding FB may have been a little too harsh...I apologize for any offense I caused. While it is true that I will never join Facebook, that's not to say I've never used it. Sometimes FB is the only site a place has, so I will go. There are numerous cycling communities - including the Brush Mtn Lodge pages - I have visited. And while I don't have an account, I can get an idea of what's happening. But until it's no longer here, this will always be my first stop. Back to the cycling... Brian is headed up Indiana Pass...I'm not sure what the last known state was...snow-free or no?

All the facebook talk has almost become almost as interesting as the race... and I hate to cause more distraction from the race, but I guess I can't help myself. There was mention earlier of using imgur for hosting pictures and some of the pros and cons of doing so, I bring this up again since there seems to be a strong integration or support with imgur and reddit. There is a bikepacking group on reddit and a thread for the Tour Divide 17. When I look at social media platforms, I personally find that I tolerate reddit more than the rest, might be that it sort of feels like a forum? https://www.reddit.com/r/bikepacking/https://www.reddit.com/r/bikepacking/comments/6gapdy/2017_tour_divide_open_thread/

On that frame damage if the frame is trashed anyway why not wrap the break with fiberglass tape and soak it with resin. Then have lunch while it cures and be on your way? The materials are available at almost any hardware or auto parts store.

I don't know too much about repairing carbon fibre, I suppose you have to make whatever repairs are needed to keep moving forward, but once it's cracked and even with some repair I don't know if I could fully trust it, I'd be nervous about every bump I hit! Just a mental thing I guess.

Long live the Forum! I too have been trying to put my finger on just why I prefer race coverage on the Forum vs Facebook but can't come up with any one thing. I do notice that FB seems to have been hijacked by a just a couple personalities and when following the comments there I'm not sure if its the Tour Divide or the Special Olympics! The comments here on the Forum seem much more insightful, relevant and informative. But maybe that's just me. God knows I spend to much time on FB though....
Back to the race...What a great year this is turning out to be! A little bit of everything-bad weather, reroutes, broken bikes, strange ailments and with maybe some forest fires yet in the Carson? Epic year!

No zip ties needed. Carbon fiber bikes are made the same way fiberglass is done except carbon fibers are used instead of glass fibers resulting in much more strength for the weight. The field repair suggested would be ugly but stronger than the original. It is like a cast on a broken arm except it is adhered to the original material. The job would take about 10 minutes and then a little time to cure. I would have more faith in the repair than the underlying bike after such apparent "craftsmanship" was exhibited.
Watermelon, I share your taste in reading, I just picked up a copy of Trout Fishing in America in a used book store the other day.

I probably should not have made the comment about craftsmanship as the crack may be the result of impact damage from the fork failure that has grown. The initial construction could have been just fine. The idea of riding a bike with a compromised triangle is like playing Russian roulette.

I would be terrified every time I got over 10mph. Looks like he is past Salida, so maybe he got a quick fix there.

Long live the Forum! I too have been trying to put my finger on just why I prefer race coverage on the Forum vs Facebook
I wasn't going to go here but since I post on all of them....ever try to find the posting in any kind of order of FB? Here it is all chronological, each new page is in order of the latest post. I tried finding something on the FB post and it was in order of 3 days ago, 2 hours ago, last week.....I got frustrated. And now MY back to the races: In his previous attempt at the TDR Arthur Kopatsy made it into Ovando in really poor shape. I remember the owner of the BCC, Liz and I trying everything in our bag of motherly advices, to get his spirits back up. Trying to heal the mental and physical wounds he was going thru. And alas he had to scratch. He was absolutely dejected over it. We kept up the "there is always next time. You are so young. You are a rookie now. This knowledge will go for for you next time." Well gosh darn it all OUR BOY is now in 10th place! And Arthur if you read this I just heard from Liz and we are both very proud of ya!!!!
