Would someone please tell me why the Tour Divide takes the paved Chaco and El Malpais alternates on the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route instead of the very cool main route? I know if it's too wet it can be unrideable, but isn't it dry this time of year? They are missing a lot of great riding. Thanks.
Those alternates are optional - the racers can take the main route if they wish to.

Can you give the percentage of starters vs sub 20 day averages? That way it takes into account a weighted average of the starting wolf pack.
I know that this year, compared to 2015, it took me 2 hours longer to reach Elkford - and I'm in a bit better shape than 2015, although slower than the average GD racer (I'm 66, give an old man a break).
Considering my single-day PB is 74 miles of mostly flatland gravel grinding, you have my utmost respect just for showing up at the start line of a race like this. Now I'm not a professional statistician, and I did not take the time to verify the status of every single rider listed, but if you'll accept a small margin of error then this will give you a general idea of percentages of sub-20 day finishers relative to all Grand Depart starters since 2011. (#s are meant to include SOBO, NOBO, individuals and tandems, but not ITTs) 2017 - 11/170 - 6.47% 2016 - 16/161 - 9.94% 2015 - 26/143 - 18.18% 2014 - 6/119 - 5.04% 2013 - 12/130 - 9.23% 2012 - 9/101 - 8.91% 2011 - 10/56 - 17.86%

Possible factors: 2011 Snow reroutes, easier course 2012 ? 2013 Wet weather, washed out northern portion of course after a couple days 2014 Very wet for X days 2015 Great weather 2016 A bit wet 2017 Hooboy! Let the games begin - First day mud fest, *Koko Claims new route, more wet weather, fire reroute *If I can do it at age 66, I don't wanna hear no whining from you young whippersnappers!

Quick question: Is there anybody left racing for the Nobo's other than Evan Lee? Looks like the Mike's Grosso and Jolly have ended at Pinedale 3 days ago.
Evan is the last one standing. Mike J and Mike G dropped a few days ago in Pinedale ( separate issues ), Nick and Jason way south in Colorado and Larry and I were out right off the bat. Hard year for NOBO ... next year ! Give him a good welcome !

Andrew Kulmatiski (ITT) has been kicking it in high gear. On track to place maybe second??
Anyone have an idea why he stopped for such a long time shy of Cuba? He had been right on Brian's time up till then.
Any way you look at it, and amazing ride!

Rear wheel issues, XD driver went. Got a new wheel from Santa Fe and back at it. Last year had a rear mech fail on Polvadera Mesa, bloody unlucky

I'll try to time my work schedule at the shop with his arrival and post his photo. That is some kind of tenacity to keep going while the rest of the field had to scratch. Like swimming against the tide.

On my drive home I always like to go back to some of my favorite places on the route. Makes for a relaxing way to revisit the Divide. Found Evan battling a heinous headwind south of Pinedale a couple days ago. The guy rocks! Met him on Marshal pass during the race. Cool to see him battling all that the Divide can dish out. Go Evan!
