Meanwhile, at the other end of the course, Dom Irvine is killing it! He rode through the night, not a bad idea in the heat. Will he make it to Pie Town before a rest?

At the half mile,  Chase Medina had a chain mechanical (master link malfunction).
Swiz was already racing when he arrived.  He made it to the start line with about 45 seconds to go.
Cheers~!

The gravel road from Seeley to Orlando was worked on last year. Any guesses on how that will hold up too the forecasted rain on Sunday? Will it stay firm? Or, turn to mud?

The road was worked last year and then we had the fires thru September and, the roads ain't pretty.  Didn't think about that.  Those high speed curves on the gravel aren't going to happen due to logging trucks sharing the roads taking out all the decks of timber cut down to slow the fires.  It gets better when you reach the forest service cabin area at Monture.  Cottonwood is a mess in some spots.

So we just watch dots!  Thanks for the theory.  Gives me something to go on.

PS.  Orlando is in Florida.  We're Ovando in Montana, not that Spellcheck or most post offices know that.  Ha!

Marty Johnson had issues the first day in Separ, now I see he is in Silver City last few hours, visited a motel and pharmacy. Anyone have intel on his situation?

I rode with Marty in 2015, and bumped into him in 2017 along the trail.

Hope he is OK.

And once the Race is over, you won't remember how you made it through, how you managed to survive. You won't even be sure whether the Race is really over. But one thing is certain. When you come out of the Race, you won't be the same person who rode in. That's what the Race is all about.

Yeah, I was wondering about Marty Johnson as well.  He was in Separ for an awful long time.  Sounds like he was having some issues with the heat maybe ??

Sobo and Nobo front runners are blazing!  Might have quite a collision with the golden spike this year.

When does the touring mode rule on Trackleaders apply? Do they wait a day or two in case people have problems on the first day or are just taking their time getting into the swing of things?

Yup, that's him.  Saw him cruising through Silver City a two days ago.   The backpack and dark colored long-sleeve seemed like an odd combination for the hot desert-- but it doesn't seem to bother him!  He finally took a 4 hour break in Grants.  Incredible.
