Forecast for CO high country is ugly for this weekend - snow levels near 9000', lows in the low 30's overnight. Brush mtn might be sheltering some cold riders!

I'm a fairly new dot watcher, and don't remember much talk of snow the last two years - I know we have more snow than usual but how much snow is common to expect on the route

Once you're out of Montana, snow (from the sky) has been pretty rare (unheard of?). Combined with the snow on the ground thru CO, this is going to slow things down significantly. IMO CO is the "easiest" state in a normal year

Rock creek ford after lynx pass could be interesting this weekend with high river flows coupled with cold temps....

Boreas Pass is usually open by now, this year I have no idea, we have snow due Saturday night, probably be a lot more at higher elevations.

I have not met anyone who has come over the pass or gone up high so do not know if it is passable, you can walk around the gates, I assume it is worse on the Summit County side.

Looks like NOBO Graham Suffield is taking the Gold Dust trail uphill from Como to the top of Boreas Pass.  That is still optional for NOBO riders, right?  I'm assuming the road is probably cleared of snow, but I bet that trail is not much fun going uphill in these conditions.

FWIW, a post from four days ago on the AllTrails.com site regarding Boreas Pass Road:

We drove to the end of the paved road to the trailhead lot which holds quite a few cars.  The road is currently closed to vehicles which made for a great bike ride, not having to worry about sharing the road with cars.  The trail is not ‘easy’ to bike to the summit as it’s entirely on a grade.  Took us 1:40 to ascend and 40 min to descend.  Road is pretty soft but no snow.  Also it can be quite rocky in places.  It was absolutely fantastic...highly recommend.  You will know when you reach the summit.

Sofiane has reached Brush Mtn Lodge with Josh about an hour behind him.  I'm guessing he will try to push to Steamboat Springs, but we'll see.

Today's rider that came in between 9am and 6 pm:
-  Ross Judice of OR.  Okay he isn't on a spotter, not in the race but he has taken the NOBO trail all the way here so I figure he deserves his claim to fame.  Arrived earlier in the day with a bad belly that he is blaming it on last nights beer, so is spending the day and night with a hot shower at the BCC and rest in the sheep wagon.  Hopefully he'll be on track again Sat.

-  Michael DeJong of CO and his son Devin.  Lunch at the Bullet and out to Lincoln.  Notice Devin's suspension.

-  Phil Rice of VA, pedaling for the cure for MS.  Please see https://pedalingforthecure.com/.  He is riding with

-  Sam Garre of WI.  Came in late afternoon with

-  Andreas Hitzler of Ontario Canada who they met on the trail.

All went to Trixi's for a sit down meal.  Then Sam and Phil decided on a night time climb over Huckleberry and Andreas is still at Trixi's where they have a band playing tonight.

This RACE tho! Hot. I like Seistrup. 38. Is he a "rookie" at TD? Getting stronger and faster as the race wears on. Simplicity always wins, those without plans who don't need motels. Matt Lee's original "one-motel-night challenge" still stands. TD is a spiritual journey and the happiest rider will prevail. Remember that video of Kato 3 or 4 years back joyously "WHOOOHOOOing!!!" on that final stretch to the border for his win?? TD Forever!!!

Yup.Its starting to take shape at the front.Kinda scary thinking the efforts these riders are putting themselves through.Mother Nature is on a bender in Colorado and the leaders will be faced with some tough conditions.Onward and Upward we go.

Its 2:15 am and without doubt very cold, dark and miserable going over Watershed Divide.  It looks like Sofiane Sehili has lost the trail for almost 2 hours now. It is very rocky there and no doubt snow covered. Tough route finding with the stress of being in below freezing temps and snowfall up there. Steamboat is calling for a low of 33 and 70% snow tonight and they are a good 1500-1800 ft higher than Steamboat right now. Josh kato is inside of 5 miles to take the lead.  I can tell ya that I wouldn't want to be up there right now. Especially wearing lightweight gear.

This weather is probably going to separate the wheat from the chaff. You had better have a proven system and know your absolute limits if you are  riding into Colorado right now.
Being fast is is not going to be enough. It looks like those with deep mountain experience could have the advantage for the next few days.

If I'm reading it right, Sofi has spent the past 5 hours wandering in the (presumed) snow at the top of the Divide.  I know he is experienced, but I hope he is safe!  At the least, this will be a huge test of the psyche.

EDIT:  He seems to be heading back down the route.  This is not good.

Wow Bob you're right. He's going backwards. 4am is soul-crushing time, easy to get disoriented, and a good time to get in a sleeping bag and warm up and recover a bit. I really hope he is okay and find new energy with the morning light or crosses Path with Josh Kato and that brings him back up. "Never give up at night. Always wait to the next morning." I forget who said that but it was my North Star on the Divide.

Hi all,

New here to the forums, but I've been watching this year (I have a buddy in the race).

Re: Sofi turning back... is it possible the route isn't passable up there?

Re: Sofi turning back... is it possible the route isn't passable up there?

Very possible, although more likely it is just not findable.  The descent off that divide is supposed to be extremely rough and rocky and in the dark, with snow falling, it might look like the rest of the woods around it.
