Chris has another great setup position. Del Norte by midnight for some civilised sleep and re-supply, and Indiana pass by the dawn's early light, whereas his chasers have a cold bivy up there in the outer space of Cochetopa and Carnero. Soon we're into the wilds of the Brazos, Polvadera and the Gila-Monster!! It's logistics time!!

I'm sure 'Sofi' has his fair share of sponsors.
Sof is a bike messenger in Paris. He rode the last TD on a $1000 cross bike. He has more support now - I think he gets bags from Apidura and maybe a few other things but that's about it. Until now he's not been "known", although his achievements are impressive. No doubt that winning the TD and giving Mike's record a nudge would have changed all that. Maybe next time. In my books giving Mike's recored a nudge, on a longer course, is something I didn't think we'd see (for some time at least). The boldness of his strategy in riding non-stop to Helena is mind boggling. In the future any contenders will look at that as the new model as to how to ride the course fast. |

It would seem that the e-bike (with the chain-suck), pictured here a few days ago, belongs to Spencer Harding. As you know, he and Rugile are documenting this year's event and following Lael.
He followed Kai and Evan out on their aborted attempt to Steamboat, with the hope of taking some good pics, only to have to abort himself. Not sure sure the push back to the Brush Mountain was quite what he had in mind.

Chris' logistics are looking really fortunate right now. He's got Platoro in store-opening hours, which helps a lot because after that its a loooooong dry Brazos slog to El Rito and Abiquiu. Hopewell campground is an oasis. This race is on!!

Not trying to be ugly, however, it is my opinion that it is extremely poor form to quit a race because you can’t set a new record or because you can’t win the race. I think it disrespects the other racers and the community in general. These races are about many things, including, adversity and how you deal with it. Examples from both sides of this view by multiple riders this year. I’ve said my peace. Thanks, Scott.

If you are referring to Lael, there was a link a ways back that explained her scratch. It was not because she couldn't win or break the record - it was so that she could include her friend in the festivities at BML. In order to comply with the Rules of the TD, she would have had to ignore her friend for the entire time they were at BML. |

I don’t want to point anyone out by name, but several riders and their reasons for scratching this year quite bothered me for some reason. Maybe I am reflecting personally on what I would have done in the same situation in the ultra races I have participated in. Anyway, everyone has their right to make the right decision for themselves and not everyone would agree with my opinion, but I just wanted to get it off of my chest.

Sometimes things get into ones head and can't get shook loose. I think that's what happened to Sophiane.
I had not read about Lael scratching because of her friend and I think that I would have given that a pass due to how the weather impacted all travel and how everyone was packed into BML. Of the riders that were there, I wonder how many of them are friends in real life. Or even friends with those that run BML. Just my take on it.
As mentioned previously, I still would have liked them to document how record setting rides can be completely knocked out of whack by something as unforeseen as a mid June snowstorm.

But you ended up being ugly. Easy to be a critic I guess! I don't think the other racers give a shit if another one scratches or not. If one has a goal to win or set a record then why continue if you can't reach your goals? When I did it my goal was to finish which was a much easier goal than to win or set a record which takes a toll on the body and mind. |
