I've been reading all of the discussion about riders who are out and I'm wondering why nobody is discussing the rookie out front. It is interesting to discuss and dissect the reasons for failure and especially when something serious like Josh's situation happens. I hope he recovers quickly and completely.
Another poster said it was disrespectful to the other racers for the favorites to quit. I think it's disrespectful to the ones who quit to armchair quarterback their decision and especially disrespectful to the ones still in the race to ignore their ongoing performances. They are the tough guys/gals who didn't quit. Let's get back to the race.
Chris Seistrup has been riding a stellar race, making great decisions and enduring just like the rest of them except it's all new to him. Whether he wins or not give the guy some love! All the experienced experts who are behind him or scratched have their reasons for being where they are but let's pay attention to the guy(s) who is(are) in the same race enduring the same conditions not quitting. The other two guys out front deserve some attention too but Chris is a friend so I am pushing for him. This will go down as another legendary TDR and the fact that a rookie is leading it for so long is astonishing. Not to mention that the guy is a hemophiliac who missed the race last year because of a training crash causing a serious internal bleed. The guy is out there risking his life and heath!
And another shout out to John Shilling who has zero chance of winning but is out there to finish and take in the experience. Burrito power!

Yeah to Chris S leading the pack. Don't know this dude accept he was one of two racers that finished the Pinyons to Pines nearly 300 mile mtn bike race this May in Flagstaff. The other 43 of us dropped because of a brutal wet winter storm on day 2 that he rode through. He also rode 100 miles from Prescott to Flagstaff the day before the Pinyons to Pines. What a warmup!!! And what great training for the TD. Love seeing an Arizona racer out front. Love John Schilling too. That dude is way solid. I saw a picture of another racer from Arizona with a pay n take jersey on. Anyone know who that is??
Looks like a bunch of solid riders out there this year.
Great job to all of you pushing forward!!

Brad, the PnT jerseys are worn by Joe Pavlik and Nathan Franklin. Neither are on Trackleaders.

Interesting update on dotwatcher.cc
"From Kim Raeymaekers post you can hear that they were relying on hearsay and someone doing a reconnaissance ride on Lael's film crew's electric bike:"
Does not seem legit to me.

Anyone have any news on my bud Mike Jolly? I saw his early check-in heading NOBO, but no movement for the last 5 days.
Edit: Caught up with him, out with a respiratory infection.

Edit: Caught up with him, out with a respiratory infection. Major bummer. It seems like a lot of cyclists get respiratory issues on the TD. I know last July riding Lodgepole, Cabin and Galton passes was a miserably dusty experience. Combine the dust with pollen and other irritants in areas that our bodies are not acclimated to could cause problems.

There were a lot of 60+ riders in the bikpacking.com pre-ride Bike Check Besides Hal Russel, now many are left? Lots of dots have not moved in days

Apologies in advance in case this has been discussed.... in depth.
Why does the TD always start in mid June? It seems like a number of years have substantial snow years. I'm not too informed about the weather variations throughout the course, but wouldn't a mid-August start improve the odds of better conditions. The northern half would be snow free and the final stretch (New Mexico) would probably a little cooler.
Thoughts?

Matthew chose that date to maximize daylight.
