Seistrup continues to create his own good fortune with great on-course tactics. Early start to this long paved section, he's just passed "No Pueblo No Pintado" and will have the soul-sucking road into Grants behind him probably by mid-afternoon. But then a critical decision on logistics - Pie Town is not 24/7 and the next real supply is Silver City - so does he attack the Gila all the way from Grants or lay-up for a Pie Town breakfast? JUST KEEP MOVING. Amazing ride for this man, I am a fan of his positivity and energy! Steve is giving a great chase and you never know what can happen - let's hope for an injury free finish for everyone still on course. -- Tour Divide Forever!

The 'Toaster House' hostel in Pie Town usually has food in the freezer on the back porch. Just be sure to leave a donation in the jar by the kitchen table.

If I read the map correctly Chris is now facing increasing headwinds and light rain that will have subsided by the time Steve gets there. But given his spirit and lead I do think he will ride this home successfully.

Good point - 24 hour resupply if Chris is aware.

Apologies in advance in case this has been discussed.... in depth.
Why does the TD always start in mid June? It seems like a number of years have substantial snow years. I'm not too informed about the weather variations throughout the course, but wouldn't a mid-August start improve the odds of better conditions. The northern half would be snow free and the final stretch (New Mexico) would probably a little cooler.
Thoughts?
The one big advantage of the June start is the amount of daylight available to the riders. EDIT: Apologies to BobM...didn't see your reply.

Hey there’s a funky outdoor art installation outside Pie Town, I think somewhere north of town. Does the TD course go by it?

Are you talking about the new cell tower? The windmill contractor's yard? When I was at the Toaster House last year there was a ton of backpacker type food piled up. Apparently many hiking the CDT have a resupply package sent to Pie Town and they leave what they don't need at the Toaster House. A lot of that food is pretty old so checking the dates on it is a good idea.

20/25/30 day green flags are up. This year they are computed on average speed instead of taking representative historical data.
So... that means they never lag, but they also... never stop! Not to sleep, eat, etc.

With all the debate online about visitation, film crews and real life spectating, made me think that maybe the racers are getting tired of the interruptions by people wanting to interact with them. I know I was frustrated with repeatedly having to re-explain myself hiking through the Grand Canyon
Probably not Not unless it is preventing them from catching the racer ahead

There were a lot of 60+ riders in the bikpacking.com pre-ride Bike Check Besides Hal Russel, now many are left? Lots of dots have not moved in days
. Not sure about how many are still racing but looks like the first 60+ rider is Steve Brigham in about 52nd place overall.

While out biking on Ute Pass today I caught up with Rich Caramadre and had a quick visit. He is riding a single speed and this is his first bikepacking trip, can you believe that? He has not been rained on yet (beginners luck?). He looked good and is certainly doing great by his daily average, but was having his doubts as I'm sure one has a million times when out on this adventure.

This is great, thanks! Please keep these in next year too from the start!

Love these features, thank you! The windy layer is awesome, too! A question: Is it possible to still see the tracks (in race flow) of those riders that have scratched? Was especially looking for Sofiane's track. And I have a couple more ideas for additional layers in the race flow chart for the future: 1. It would be great to have a visual representation of the elevetion profile in the flow chart along the miles axis. That could give a much better idea of how elevation influences speed. 2. Also, it would be nice to blend in shading to represent sunset/sunrise/night along the miles-axis of the chart to get a better feeling how night times influence riding times. These are just some ideas to satisfy my inner nerd. I love the functionality that is alread available in track leaders!

The ones who hate that sort of thing (and there have been some big names in the past) do an ITT. No one needs to know you're out there except Matt.
