Hey John S.,

Heard your post.  Sorry to hear of the drop.  But heads up man.  Sounds like you had a strong ride deep into Colorado.  Can't help the body issue or infection stuff.  10 years ago I was in Salida on July 4th.  I finished the race to find out I was relegated for missing a long section before Butte in an all day rainstorm.  At the time I did not have GPS and was riding with a map and mileage counter on my wheels.  Was super bummed for relegation but very happy to finish and for the entire experience.

Lets ride sometime of course after recovery.  I like your style!

Great ride by Zoe Chauderlot of France! 2nd placed woman, rookie rider, aged 26. Pushed through lots of mud, had some tough mechanicals to deal with, and almost scratched at one point. But she rode really hard to get in under 21 days. Been watching her dot from the start and really impressed!
Found a pic in my pile of shots from day 1, big smile and charging up the hill into the high Rockies trail an hour or so into the race. Congrats Zoe!

Thanks all for the kind words and support here. I gave it everything I had. Still not sure what exactly bit me, but it was in a really bad location, just above my right knee/front of the quad. By the time I noticed it, maybe a day or two after it happened, it began affecting my pedaling. I was already battling some intense saddle sores. By the time I reached Salida I really needed a hotel room. The next morning, July 4th, I felt worse. I made it over to the ER to have the bite site looked at. They installed a drainage loop and got me on a heavy double dose of antibiotics. I took another night hoping for a miracle, but it just wasn't meant to be. I could barely walk around my hotel bed. That was it. My wife then hopped in my car and drove the 11+ hours up to Salida to bring me home. I still can't believe I had to scratch out so far in. I'll probably come back to Salida sometime soon and finish it up. Not sure I'll do the full route again, it's really the logistics nightmare for most people, myself included. Cheering hard for the group of riders I had been in close contact with the past week: Hal, Eric, Bonnie, Grant, Mikki. I had an amazing time out there. Starting to go through the pics and begin the blog stuff....

Bittersweet I'm sure.  I sure hope his doctor gives him the go-ahead to do this again.

I met Hal briefly before I crossed the Great Basin. Of all the people riding, he might be the most inspiring to me, simply because he's a few years older and still making it happen. I felt honored to meet him; the other rider I was with at the time described him as the Yoda of the Tour Divide. Living it right!

Congrats Bonnie! Lung damage, torn ligaments in her back and I don't know what else (but Grant does). Perseverance!

Agreed 100%. Never had the pleasure of meeting Hal but what a tremendous inspiration to us all.

I had an idea of re-naming, naming the route the "Hal Russel Trail" in his honor. I even phoned the Adventure Cycling Ass. I was met with a rather terse answer.

Anyway, maybe the "organizers" of the TD could take a look at it.

Snagged these from Linda Guerrette’s FB feed. I woulda shared the actual post, but not sure exactly how to get that done. So here ya go.

I think a new “Legend” poster might be in order. (paging Mike Dion.)
