Howdy guys,
My name's Nick and I recently graduated college down here in Texas. I will be "Competing" in Tour Divide 2011 (And it is in quote simply because if I finish it I'd be thrilled) in a month or so and I had a question about getting myself and my bike to Banff.
I was thinking of packing it up and shipping it to Banff, then getting a plane ride to Calgary and renting a car to Banff. This is a tentative plan that I haven't actually worked out yet. I've got a room in Banff for the night of the 9th, before the grand depart.
How's everybody else doing it, though? Since this is all new to me I am completely open for suggestions.
Thank you.

Please be green(er)--don't rent a car unless you can fill it with other starters.

Even Greener: ride your bike to Banff(search through the thread I think a few people are planning on doing that too). I concur with Matthew, Do Not Ship Your Bike. Also do not use a fancy expensive hard case, the post office in Banff can't ship large cases back to the states.

in 2009 a starter shipped his bike and it sat in customs for a week or so without moving a inch. i think he ended up starting a day late? pack it in a bike box recycled from bike shop and take it with you on plane. shuttle or ride to banff, i'm taking shuttle.

I got by in 2009 by the skin of my teeth. My bike was out of customs the same day I arrived. I rode down highway 1 the next day as a nice warm up. I think there is an offroad route if you dig through the TD2011 thread.

I'm not riding the race, but I'm leaving on August 9th or so from Banff to ride as much of the GDMBR as possible in 30 days or so. (hopefully all of it) Anyway, I've communicated with Jason at the Ski Stop who strongly recommends flying with your bike too. However, if you have the time there is no reason you cannot ship your bike to Banff. Check out Bikeflights.com. They ship bikes to Canada ALL of the time. You do of course, have to have the correct paper work filled out and yes, you do have to send it in advance, but I'm guessing you have a second bike that you can ride at home. Plus, you should be tapering your training anyway.

Can I get a refund on my bike charge (and maybe the 15% discount) if I've already paid?
