Rider 002 in the Ovando pictures is Josh Kato. He and Val are both doing incredible rides. Great fun to watch and cheer on from afar.

Thanks for the pictures, they are a great addition.

I sit here in amazement and tons of envy about all that participate in this......thanks for the pix everyone...seeing just a glimpse of the people doing this, their bikes/setup is still pretty neat....man, im such a bike geek (and I've never done one minute of bikepacking)...but I feel the time is coming soon......thanks for the inspiration!

Never seen pics from a bikepacking race with so much muddy rain gear! Hardened field out there this year. Must have been a tough night last night to bivy after being wet all day and then dealing with temps in the 30s. Man!

I have a feeling Mike Dion is missing the real story this year  Wink

Good Morning Everyone!

It has been a fast and furious morning in Ovando MT with people making up for yesterday's weather fiasco and eating up as much road as possible before the next rounds of rain start.

Out early EARLY this morning:
Sara, David Wicks, Calvin who all spent the night.  Casey Rhea left later in the morning after contemplating staying another day but continued on after worrying momentum could be lost forever.

In and out within 15 minutes after record breaking mass consumption eating:
-  Terry Brannick of NC who is attempting the 2nd ever Yo-Yo and who we hope to see again in a few weeks.
-  Dylan Allen of Helena MT a home town boy.  Told him the posting regarding the credit cards in Columbia Falls.   If you are reading this you may destroy them.  He stopped them and has new ones coming.  Thanks from Dylan.
-  Renato Alessandrini of Ontario Canada
-  New Zealand's McDonald who is not to be confused with
-  AZ's Kent McDonald who is riding with
-  Patrick Day of British Columbia and
-  Andy Lawrence of the UK

The road is clear for a few more hours.  Carry On!  And good riding!

Angler,

It's so great to put faces to the names.  Thank you for the pics and for serving the racers so well!!  You're making the race relational for so many of us, on and off the trail.

Blessings to you!!

I'm really sad about Alex Harris having to drop out.  He's a world-class athlete/adventurer and I sincerely hope his injury won't keep him from leading others on his epic adventures in Africa!!

IMPORTANT ROAD CLOSURE

I'm going to let this message we received from a work crew in Wyoming speak for itself:

"Hey. I wanted to give you a heads up so you can notify your members for an alternate route. Highway 70 (Sage Creek Rd) in WYOMING between Rawlins, WY and highway 71 is CLOSED during most the day. It is ILLEGAL to ride it during operation times, 8am-12pm, then 1pm-5pm. One of your cyclists already butted through during work times and enforced very negative feelings about long distance bikers on the roads, and one biker already had to be driven out, he couldn't make it over and through the construction zones. Please don't let this happen. Road is closed, and VERY DANGEROUS! I wouldn't send a cyclist down that route even if I didn't like the person. Deep ruts, soft and loose dirt, lots of heavy equipment, big rocks, and so on - Its bad. Thanks

Alternative routing is being looked for, but until then we ask that all humans - especially riders on the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route - respect the closure hours. Again those hours are 8am to 12pm, and 1pm to 5pm Monday through Saturday. It is open all day Sunday.

Cathy & Russ could you please pass this along to southbound riders.

I can try to put something on the greeting but this isn't really clear. Per the maps I've checked 71 is Sage Creek Rd. I don't see a "70."

Hi,

"70" is more south of Rawlins. More or less paralleling HYW 80. To get there you have to take either the 130 via Saratoga or the 789 west of Rawlins.
I remember there was an ongoing construction at last year TD. This road got a place under my top 10 crappy TD sections.

71 goes south out of Rawlins and hits 70 way south along the Colorado border. Whats the option for this since closed during the day?

This still looks backwards. It's Hwy 71 that is Sage Creek Rd.  that runs between Rawlins and Hwy 70.

Okay, spoke with WYDOT and Ross is going to chase down some details. There's nothing on their maps so he needs to see if its them or someone else doing the construction.

I have to run to the office but will update when I get more information.
