I have a feeling that Montana Miller is racing on Knards. Why would you ride a Krampus if you weren't going to use Knards?
Yep, he is on knards. I ran into him in helena and that is what he had on at that point in the race.

Tracked Tim Hinderman in Grand Teton today while camping with my family. Tim is as Tough as Nails and all smiles. Keep it up Tim! Photo attached.

Michelle DuLieu - I knew that name sounded familiar. She was the one that got altitude sickness in the CTR last year. Took about 10 days to get to Silverton (started in Durango) and she pushed on after that. I was hoping for a finish but she pulled out for some reason. Hopefully she can pull through and finish the TD! GO GO GO!!!

No one has explained it yet. Some folks who took fire re-routes are not orange, some who scratched and are continuing to tour are orange, and there is at least one guy who skipped the Flathead section in Canada who is not orange and not scratched. It looks like Tim took an approved fire re-route coming into Cuba.

Like most, not sure of the orange coding detail - it appears from his SPOT track that Tim may have taken the paved road, bypassing the Brooks Lake dirt road section, on Togwatee Pass in Montana.

And once the Race is over, you won't remember how you made it through, how you managed to survive. You won't even be sure whether the Race is really over. But one thing is certain. When you come out of the Race, you won't be the same person who rode in. That's what the Race is all about.

Check out Tim's track in southern Canada and northern Montana. It looks like the SPOT was misbehaving. Batteries, maybe? Anyway, the algorithm maybe didn't like the apparent track right at the border, a track which is surely not Tim's real track.
The route into Cuba was a current fire re-route, correct?

I've been offline for the TD and most everything else until a couple days ago because I was working an outta state intense project. I was missing the TD badly. Well, what a thrill to see Jason Snell's name in the listings! He's a local up north Michigan pal and monster hammerhead. I knew he was making cool bags for TD racers but had no idea he'd thrown his hat in the ring. What neat news to discover! And FIXIE, no less! I caught back up with the race when I got home by starting at the start -- no spoilers!
Last year Jason blew me away with his riding when I was visiting up north. One day he took off after work at the bike shop and biked until work again the next morning. I shoulda got the clue then! He didn't mention any goals. He didn't even really say what he'd done, I had to piece it together, "Oh, so you were riding ALL NIGHT." I just thought that's how he has fun in the summer.
Well, best wishes, Jason, as you get ever closer to the finish!

Anyone know what is the story with Laura Hamm's SPOT? It shows going off route before Chama, staying at some reservoir, then at Cuba. sr

Has anyone heard what is going on with the route north of Silver City. Some people are detouring at around mile 2584. Others are not. And it's not as though everyone who arrived there after a certain point took the detour. In the past day Klaus took it, Paul is taking it, and I think David took it, but other riders (Alice, Sarah, Kent) did not. Is it possible there is inconsistent enforcement of a fire closing? Thanks

That detour certainly doesn't look like something a rider would come up with out of thin air.

Laura Hamm's SPOT makes it look like she accidentally (or intentionally for some reason) went off route toward Chama and that reservoir. There are four white triangles along the route to Chama. It doesn't look like a SPOT error; it looks like for some reason she was actually on that road.

The occasional detour near Lake Roberts (N of S.C.), which was first taken by the tandem, is in the vicinity of the Roberts Fire, which was started by lightening last Tues. So far as I can tell, it never grew beyond 4 acres, and has been 100% contained, smoke cleared, crews released, etc. for several days. I don't know for sure how close the fire was to the course, but it doesn't appear to be on the course, although there could've been access overlap between crews and riders. I don't see how it could be affecting riders today, but who's to say. Intermittent enforcement could be a part of the explanation. Still a big mystery to me as to why, of all the riders that have finished and taken the detour, no reference has been made to it.

Laura's apparent detour is perplexing enough that it's a relief to see her SPOT back on course. Hope everything is ok there. Would be nice to hear her call in.

Do people get disqualified for NOT doing a fire detour, or another road detour like a construction detour, when the regular route is closed? (Not that I'm thinking that's what's going on near Silver City. I just wondered.)

I have a theory about why folks are turning around above Silver City.
The CDT was closed due to the Signal Peak fire. There is a "Road Closed" sign up there, about where Paul Barsom and some others have turned around. I took a photo of the sign after I traversed it going south to north back on 14 June. Just thinking that some people are paying attention to it and then taking NM 35 and then NM 15, and others are just ignoring it and forging on.
