Although Alex Harris didn't arrive until after 11 pm on Sunday June 15th, when everybody was in for the night [hence attached photo is from a friend in Lincoln] he did spend a couple of hours resting in Ovando and personally I want to thank two of our residents.  Thank you Tony!, who upon seeing Alex biking back and forth ran out with a few sandwiches for him and thank you Shaun! for allowing Alex to get a couple of hours sleep in your cabin and shuttling more food to him.

As Jefe approaches Butte, I notice that trackleaders doesn't show the new route to Butte (http://www.bikepacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=6102.msg62949#msg62949).  I assume the I-15 alternate will remain legal, and for those pursuing the record, common.  Hopefully everyone else will choose the new route, which looks like way more fun.  (The fact that I rode the I-15 at night last year may prejudice me.)

I finished the 2013 TD.  I did the whole damn thing,
excluding the 2013 detours, in good style and—as
far as I know—totally in accordance with the rules.

I'm pretty sure Matthew said that the new route is mandatory.

Damn I'm really feeling for those riders coming into the Blackfoot Valley right now.  It is pouring rain and has been off and on all day.  And the temps MAY be in the 50's.  This has got to be misery incarnate.

Any word on North bounder Mike Jolly?  His tracker has him in Silver City since the end of day 1.

Any word on Elijah Kane? He mentioned not wanting to leave the Bolton Creek Trading Post. Really nice guy to meet at the start. I'm rooting for you! You gotta keep moving!

If people pull out of the race, do they decide to tour it and get more gear or return for another go the following year?

TD14: Lindsay Shepard called in from Butte, Sheila Reiter called in to say she is OUT with an injury, and Lorenzo Serra called in from Ovando!

Some just start touring and some return to race another time.

I starting solo ITT with no real goal other than Mexico. Ran into some cool guys early on and just switched to tour and enjoy mode, and it's fantastic.

Just recvd a message from a very worried and unfortunately mis-understandable mother of a rider from England whose gps shows he has been stopped for a very long time.  She is worried something has happened but...... she didn't leave a name.   Not even hers.   Says he is east of us --- which doesn't show anybody.  Anybody got a clue so I can try to call her and help?  Thanks to all!

3rd Place Lorenzo Serra has left Ovando at around 4:45 pm after a full meal that the Stray Bullet Café supplied after staying open a bit later for him.  He arrived in pouring rain looking pretty darn miserable.  But after eating, gathering the much popular gummy worms [so popular in fact the owners of the store ran into town to get more] and other assorted snacks he left under partially sunny skies and a lot drier conditions.  For now.  Loaded him up with Advil as he injured his knee and while trying to take the effort off of it has strained his left Achilles tendon.  Said he slept for 2.5 hours night one, 3.5 night two, and 4.5 night 3 and came out of that more tired than without sleep.  But he is looking good so far.  Hoping the leg eases up and he makes it through.  Photos attached of his arrival, looking miserable, and what a good meal will do to a guy.  Also side note tandem riders Katie and Sam called in for a sack lunch to await them upon their arrival to Ovando around 8 tonight.  Not sure if they will stay or continue; all depends on weather but the food is here for them none the less.  Awaiting Walter Brumniach who should be here within an hour.  Carry on folks!

That 30 miles, curious to know what the time difference will be between Jefe doing it, and JP going on I15. Does this warrant a new record anyways, or is it too short?

Jefe is totally killin' it, if we compare it with the ghost of JayP. I remember JayP lost his SPOT around Lincoln, MT - dunno how that effects the ghost's position - may be a little off.

Great photos of Lorenzo and thanks for the update. Excellent. Looking forward to Walter getting there and seeing some photos. Sounds like he has had a wet couple of days.

Freaked me out for a second with the reroute-thought Jefe needed to sleep. Yep this way has to be better than along the freeway. I was in some pain then with ankle issues and rain 2yrs ago so no good feelings there.

I will miss the hyooooge train tunnel right before you head onto I-70, but highway riding, and even frontage road highway riding isn't fun. Too straight without enough bumps - it's easy to be mesmerized by then road and fall asleep! "Unmaintained Cattle Trail" sign - ah, memories.

Have to admit that for a first place rider [compared to previous years of focused "don't bother me" attitudes] he was the most animated, genuinely nice rider who was more than happy to talk to the locals.  We're cheering him on.

And he is doing it all on his own. The last few years the leaders have more or less ridden together, therefore having some company, at least until the Basin last year and Silver City in 2012. Mentally tough doing it on your lonesome!
