And he is doing it all on his own. The last few years the leaders have more or less ridden together, therefore having some company, at least until the Basin last year and Silver City in 2012. Mentally tough doing it on your lonesome!
I was thinking exactly the same thing. I think both Walter and Lorenzo may be better off for a bit of company. I know from last year Walter is quite a social chap and loves a chat and I think he would not mind me saying even if he is dribbling rubbish most of the time. :-P

Freaked me out for a second with the reroute-thought Jefe needed to sleep. Yep this way has to be better than along the freeway. I was in some pain then with ankle issues and rain 2yrs ago so no good feelings there.
Jarral

Looks like Trackleaders needs to be updated to have the proper course and it shows Jefe off right.. I don't know that much about the course but I *think* he is on the new route that does not go along I15.

Feel like I'm hogging the forum space.  Walter Brumniach, Australia, 4th place just arrived Ovandoat 5:45 pm  and is enroute to Trixi's for food.  Said he wasn't sure how far he'd continue today as he wasn't it in to win just to finish.  Storied that he ran in circle at the snow slope above Seeley as gps said to go one way and his memory was to go the opposite.  He went gps's version and following tire tracks which came to a stop with foot prints all over trying to figure things out.  Turned out his intuition was correct and he had to back track.  Exhausting.  But he looks great although his bike is a mud pack.  Carry on!

Angler, we (erm, I) love the updates from the ground, and seeing the faces and the bikes en route!

Goes without saying, but you and your town's friendliness to races is such a wonderful thing: thank you, as someone who has come through before and had been greeted by some delicious desserts!

Keep in mind that Walter is 51 years old (!!!) and is currently at the front of the pack save for three younger whippersnappers. BTW Aussies don't like to lose when it comes to sporting events. Take Jesse C. as an example from last year:

Eat, Sleep, Ride, Repeat - Jesse Carlsson Talks Bikepacking & The Tour Divide
.

Those Aussies may look laid back but don't let that fool ya! (Says a guy who lived in Melbourne for five years.)

Keep in mind that Walter is 51 years old (!!!)
Walter is a very young and healthy 51 year old who comes from an adventure racing back ground, he knows how to push himslef. Bear in mind that Walter only got clearance from his doctor to get back on the bike a couple of months ago after getting cleaned up coming through the Basin in last years race. Broken leg and several ribs. His elbow is the bit that is worrying him with more pins than Evil Kneivel. He is hard core just to get back out there and seriously inspiring.

First let me say thank you so much for the kudos.  Ovando, like I said, is only a town of 65 people and this is sort of a highlight for our summer.

Now onto an urgent request:  I have deciphered a bit more of the very upset British Mother.  I believe she is questioning the status of ASHLEY BENNS, 51 yoa, from the UK who is on the trail east of Eureka and his gps has been stagnant for over 21 hours currently.  If ANYONE reads this and knows his whereabouts can you please tell him to "Call his mother!".  I'll leave a note in Ovando but gosh only knows where he is.  Thank you very much.

Lastly!  Sam and Katie the incredible tandem two have reached Ovando are scarfing down a bag dinner and will continue on their way. They are in great spirits I have been told!  Photos tomorrow after they get downloaded from a residents phone.    Carry on!

Hey Angler, thanks for posting all the updates!  My dad Tom DeVries should be passing through in 5-ish hours ride-time (Although he may stop for the night at Seeley Lake, I'm not sure of his plans at this point.)  If you see him, please say hi and give him a high-five from me!  He is already doing a lot better than he expected, his exact words were, "I can't possibly do any-more, but I would be letting myself down if I did any less".  He's making us all proud!

Take Care!

Yeah, and then there's Jesse C. who took a lightning bolt to the bod and still came in second last year!

Angler, keep it coming. In fact, me and 2 others are doing a 5 day tour in late July. Originally planned on Eureka to Seeley before turning back north. I'll have to talk them into extending it to Ovando and visit the town, drop a few bucks in payback.

No Outdoorsman stop for Jefe. Must be satisfied with his machines seaworthiness.

Winter Weather watch for the Butte area, he is probably just trying to beat it by a little. I think that 38 and snow was the overnight forecast. Any southern distance that he can get improves the weather by a little.
