I'm sure others have noticed, but I note that Walter Brumniach & Evan Deutsch took the I 15 alternate coming into Butte, rather than the new route. Does that count them out of the "race"? Looks like they got to Basin late and baulked at the thought of the new section in the prevailing weather conditions....

Any word on Lorenzo - returned to Butte after a few miles and still there?

And once the Race is over, you won't remember how you made it through, how you managed to survive. You won't even be sure whether the Race is really over. But one thing is certain. When you come out of the Race, you won't be the same person who rode in. That's what the Race is all about.

I'm not so certain that is what happened. I am a bit biased having ridden with both those chaps last year and am certain they would do everything that they could to ride within the spirit of the race. I suspect that they were both just following last years maps and maybe even GPS course and had no idea.

Seems like he took a longer way to get there than needed, meaning he will have to back track a bit more than if he had stayed on the route a little longer and cut over later. I bet he's pumped to get back on the road bike.
He posted on his facebook that since he was on his mtn bike he wast going to take some of the dirt route.. he's picking up his road bike in Salida as Ezter mentioned.

Yeah Billy is headed to Salida.
As for Evan Deutch, he called and spoke with Matthew. I think both way will be honored.
I've been out this evening. I had to run to the office to help get some equipment out. Got a few call-ins stacked. Should have them out shortly!

The new route from Basin to Butte seems to be a significant change. If the old road route were in play most folks (even wet and cold) would probably dig deep and knock out the ride into Butte for better lodging, food, Outdoorsman repairs. Now there are eight people staying the night in Basin to avoid the new, slower route at night with weather.

I was salivating at the I15 tarmack tonight as I ventured into the new route. It turned into a 4-5(?) hour full effort slogging. Fun but totally draining. Stiff headwind, sludgy road bed and more climbing than I anticipated. Turned out my longest day in the saddle so that's a plus! May not bode well for tomorrow though, oh wait, I guess that's today now. Got into butte just before midnight. I think that some people who were ahead of me are plopped down out there. I saw, in my lights, what looked suspiciously like the imprint of a TD rider in the mud. I went down once. I did discover that full mud baths help keep you warm! Sleepy time

Looking at the midpack it's really hard to tell who is racing and who is not. So many racers seem to be skipping sections.

Ouch, no. After last year's finish he was limping and showed me the ball of his foot in the hotel - a blood blister 2" + in diameter that was a recurring injury from his Arabian desert trek earlier that year. He'd sprinted us for the line on that foot. Tough bloke.

I can imagine. In tough conditions, by the time you get to Basin you'd be really tired. The Lava Mtn trail is really hard going.
