TD14: Sheila Torres-Blank called in from Salida! She had a great ride from Kremling but a harder day today. Sarah Caylor called in from Cuba. She reports fire and police forcing people off-route due to fires on the ride to Cuba. And John Fairbairn called in from Hartsel after getting pelted by some hail. This call is a little choppy.

But I am having a good time and hoping for redemption in the form of riding entire course under my own power, even if quite lacking in style points.

Exactly.  You know what you have done out there, we know what you have done out there,  Anyone who has ridden a bike on the route knows the difference between really riding it and the weird set of rules which have evolved.  Continue on and if you are deprived of the podium girls and massive endorsements and glory which come from strict compliance with the concept of what is "available to the public" or "the proper direction to hitchhike" so be it.

Everytime I ride the route I find public assistance beyond the rules is available to everyone. Human kindness and practical solutions are not always acceptable in the current rulebook.  I suppose the powers that be need to draw lines somewhere, but in the end, it is your own ride which matters.

Is Walter B. sleeping in on his final morning?  Waiting for the roads to dry out?  He's so close to the finish and seems to be dawdling this morning.  Hope everything is allright.  He has put in an impressive ride!

I was wondering the same thing. Maybe his batteries just went dead in his SPOT. Very impressive ride for sure and a huge finial push the last days.

I'm betting goatheads, for Walter B. Lots of people are reporting lots of flats. I'm thinking that for my non-racing ride on the Divide next summer, I'll go tubeless with the Knards.

TD14: Max Morris called in from Grants. He got almost to Pie Town and ripped his rear-D and had to hitchhike back. He’s contemplating pulling from the race.

Krampus - I rode Conti Race King Protection 2.2s tubeless and so did about a half dozen other riders I met going SOBO this year.  Not a single flat or tire trouble for any of us for many thousands of miles.  You might check them out if you don't like dealing with flats like most of us.

It looks like Sarah decided to keep racing. The girl has grit. We're rooting for you!

Walter, where are you??

Max, we hated to hear of your mechanical trouble and that you may quit. You've done so well.    icon_salut

Big Dave rolled in around 20 min ago to a luke warm Pabst blue ribbon after riding through a thunder shower. He is at the shop decompressing and wrapping his head around not riding a bike tomorrow.

Clearly 1+1 equals way more than 2 with Katie and Sam.  There was more hidden wisdom and secret power in their final call-in than you could ever find in a solo ride.  Love and devotion fueled their super-fast TD.  Thanks for that, K&S.

My husband thought the same thing, not sure about the knards, but he's had 5 flats and a tire slashed and that was before he got out of Montana... Make sure you go with bomb proof whatever you decide! I think it's pretty well killed his chance of finishing withing the rules... That and the derailuer disintegrating on him...
