...but alas, I was forced into retirement from the Divide by my kids, Branch & Alma (and their CEO mother), so if I am able to be out on course, it's rare enough I think I'm going to race myself ;-)
Hey Matthew - I know the feeling on my own level. After running into Tim Hinderman (NOBO, 62 years young) over the weekend, I realized there is still hope for me to finish the TD and you to return once we have college tuition and retirement paid off. Cheers. |

Ironically TD has been weathering the Ride the Divide popularity and its influx of unindoctrinated eager beavers ready to buy a mountain bike, learn to tour, then race TD all within a semester span...

Oh, yes, now I see, I just listened to Bill's call. It looks like the people who DID end up taking the regular route are able to follow the entire thing with no alternates.
Cindy Dwyan appears to be going to Santa Fe in a car. (Or she's bicycling to Santa Fe at 54 mph.)

FYI - The Arndt Brothers have pulled the plug as of July 5th, just north of the New Mexico border. Sean was suffering from stomach issues, and Matt had taken a tumble on Friday which resulted in a broken bone in his hand. Both were picked up in Antonito, CO are now enjoying a relaxing day or two in Salida with Sean's wife and a family friend. Matt stated that crossing Indiana Pass one handed is probably the hardest thing he's ever done.

I think it's important to remember one of the primary functions of the spot tracker. Sure it allows folks at home to follow their friends/ family etc and it provides a measure of transparency with regard to adherence to the rules, but IMO the most important job they do is provide a layer of safety for every rider.
Having a bunch of blue dot stalkers watching over you is a great comfort (and incentive). The guy who went awol in Yellowstone is probably pretty happy he had a spot on him. Riding lonely rural roads in the wee small hours can be a scary experience for some, and having a gps tracker does make you feel that bit better.
In all the talk of DQ's and orange dots (which I like in concept), I reckon it's important that as many dots as possible stay "alive" and on screen. I think it's good for everyone involved, racers, stalkers, supporters and organisers, etc....

Yeah, the online tracking does not provide for rider safety. However, the SPOT devices have SOS functions which do provide for safety. |

It's way up near the northern boundary of the National Park, nowhere near the start of the route - one fire they don't have to worry about! |

There's a nice tussle going on at the 25 day marker with Casey Rhea, Geoge Koefler and Ken Waring. Will they beat the 25d and what order will they finish in? All three have been see-sawing their race positions and are sleeping within 16 miles of each other. It's going to be a long day coming up for these three.
It is great that after 24 days these guys are still RACING.

I rode up Fooses yesterday, on a recon to find a spring on the Monarch Crest for upcoming CTR, and ran into four sobo guys coming into Marshall Pass. When you see bikes with bar bags, you pretty much know what they are up to. I u-turned and snapped this photo of the first in the small peloton. I'm pretty sure [my ignorant ear was untuned to his accent] it's Mark Meyers from Brisbane. I was also in Salida over July 4th and another TD rider [Rod Gemmell, from the UK?] showed up at the holiday chaos down by the riverfront park, but couldn't get out a camera before he was lost in the crowd. -Barry

Trackleader.com opens up this special world of racing to many, many people who have never heard of bikepacking or ultra distance racing. That has to be good for the sport. They are tuning in to watch the personal progress of a friend or loved one. From a spectator's point of view, I appreciate that Trackleader continues to track all riders, even those who deviated the official course or violated some other rule. The orange dot is a good way to categorize those riders and yet continue to acknowledge their daily challenges and progress. It becomes more inspirational than competitive at this point.
From following this forum, I see the frustration of very talented, very competitive racers who feel their race has been hijacked by riders with different skills and motivation. I get it. The race will evolve and I hope it finds a way to be inclusive of different categories of riders. Thank you Matt Lee for trying the orange dot solution and for everything you do behind the scenes.
