Apologies if I'm missing some other original thread on this, but the Trans Am is already a day into some great racing, and I was surprised not to find any discussion online. It's just too exciting to not discuss.  http://transambikerace.com/2016-live-tracker/Steffen Streich appears to have ridden over 400 miles on maybe 10 minutes sleep/break, so far! Evan Deutsch is hovering about ~50 miles behind Steffen, and he took about an hour break. Sarah Hammond took about 2 hours off the bike and then picked up with the same high intensity. Lael Wilcox doesn't look to have paused much, but she backed off on the intensity and is about 10-15 miles behind Sarah.  |

Hold onto your hats folks, Sarah Hammond took over the race lead, last night!!! For a brief period Lael was in second, but now she's in a close fourth with Evan Deutsch right on her heels.  This is some great racing, y'all. |

Yeah, the underlying Spot-watermarked google map appears borked -- I wonder if Spot exceeded the daily Google maps API quota (2,500 requests for free) or something. Turns out the bluedot mobile tracker still shows a map (albeit without the red track line in Safari), so I've been relying on http://bluedot.mobi/app-pc.html?event=transam16#mapcontainer today. This race just keeps blowing my mind, and I see no signs of it ceasing to do so. The top 5 are bunched close enough to make this race anyone's guess, and it's been outstanding to see women right up there in podium contention. History in the making! Sarah is about 45 miles in the lead now, and Steffen appears to be resting deeply again, so I expect he might be hammering hard tonight when he wakes. Weather is looking slightly dubious with some storms to the east. Heat relief, if nothing else. Amy C. Williams just had her bike stolen near the McKenzie bridge a few hours ago, so if anyone sees a 48cm Ruby with panniers rolling around in a pickup truck... call it in. I am having a great time watching this race! They are now in Idaho, my home state. It is fun to be able to picture the towns as they ride through. Looks like Sarah is stopped in Riggins, and Steffan is spending the night in New Meadows. Too bad they won't have time to enjoy the hot springs in New Meadows, the white water rafting and the 4th of July fireworks over the river in Riggins. I see Evan and Lael still plugging away. I was sorry to hear about Amy's bike being stolen and Brian Steele being hit with the water bottle. Good luck to everyone and I hope there are no more mishaps, human caused or otherwise.

Where are you seeing this kind of information? Unfortunate for both certainly. Hard to get that level of detail about what's happening just from forums. Thanks! |

Looks like Sara's hard earned lead might be slipping. It appears she made a wrong turn. And it does not look like it was an intentional on as there is not much in the direction she is headed.

The rules in the past have been that any alternate is allowable for riders (unlike TD for example). Only one route is shown on the Trackleaders map and I do not have the ACA maps to check if Sarah is on an approved alternate or not. Juliana Buhring did something similar a couple of years ago elsewhere on the route.
Hoping that she is on an approved alternate and not such a wrong turning as she has been on the road for almost 3 hours.

For me that would be a crushing mistake mentally. I would not be up front anyway, but a 6-hr off-course would have me beating myself up pretty bad for a while. Hopefully she is mentally tough and can shake it off.

It ain't great either. I almost got eaten by mosquitos when I was there. It would be a shame to turn around if it was an approved alternate. She could have followed the TD route down through Polaris, back onto the main route. Tiredness must have been a big factor. I wonder how long the leaders can keep this pace up for? |
