If anyone wants to do the road bike thing, next year ought to be fun.  Options for pairs and touring as well.

Hi there!

I'm in for 2016!

Took part in the transcontinental in 2014, scratched in Greece when I melted my carbon rims (bad choice, I know)

Didn't manage a big ride in 2015 due to injuries, house move and other life stuff getting in the way.

Looking to ride East to West and targeting a 200-225 mile per day average.

Many lessons learned from TCR so it's a different bike, pretty different kit list and hopefully a successful finish!!

Excited and scared in equal measure.

Roll on June 2016!

Signed up for 2016!

I'm a rookie so sure I'll have lots of questions about kit etc before June.
Planning on riding West to East and hopefully about 200miles a day.

Can't wait!!

Hi, Alistair here, from New Zealand. I'm all go for 2016. Hoping/planning on a sub 30 day adventure. I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions closer to the time, but for now I'm looking at the logistics of getting home when I finish. What's the best way to get from Yorktown to LaGuardia, for the flight home (And please don't say ride, I reckon I'll be over it by then ha ha). I see there's an airport at Newport News, but would a train/bus be a better option, bearing in mind I'll have my boxed-up bike with me. Another option is to get my bike boxed at a cycle shop and get it shipped across to LA where I have a shipping agent, then I just have to worry about getting myself home? Thanks in advance.

Yo peeps! I'm back for another go at this beast in 2016. In 2015, I was to heavy, under prepared, under financed and had no plan. That resulted in me pulling out at Canon City, CO after 13 days. 2016 will be a different story for sure. The money situation is squared away and I've lost 45 pounds since the start of this year's race. Training is kicking up soon and I can't wait till next June to get this bad boy started. I'll be starting in Astoria headed Eastbound and rolling solo, hoping for a sub-20 day finish. Looking forward to seeing everyone in Astoria for the start!!!

Looking forward to it. Plan to train in April and May (during summer holidays of my children). Still not sure about the direction of start. I will definitely choose what the majority chooses. There are a lot to learn about how to conduct myself on the way to sustain on self support. I will learn from fellow riders through social network as the days approach.

Hi,
I'm a starter for the TransAm 2016. Currently I'm getting some early training in in Norway , Finland, Sweden, ...well all of Scandinavia really. Just to test some kit and sort a few things out. Then I'm home to New Zealand to get some summer kilometers in . Hoping my summer training will be a whole lot drier than my autumn training in Scandi.
I'm looking forward to seeing everyone on the start line  and riding with some of you going from west to east.

All the best for the training.

Remember don't put off for tomorrow what you can do know

Bikepacking virgin here, planning to race the 'traditional' west to east route. Would love to copy fellow Melbourne boy Jesse's ride but on something like this, who knows?!

I'm in for 2016!  Is facebook the only place where most of the conversation is happening (hope not)?  I want to be able to determine the counts the direction that people will be doing the route.

Rookie here.  This will be a Bucket List trip.  Goal is to finish and do it in less than 40 days.  I will be 56 during the race.  I'm originally from Philadelphia, lived out west for over 30 years.  Now back east.  Life has come full circle.  Excited to be part of this event!  headbang

Anybody have some guidance on the best GPS unit for this event?  I have never used one but the organizer strongly recommends it.

Thanks!

The etrex used to be the old standby, lot's of folks using the 810, all Garmin products of course.  Lots of people using a dedicated cell phone, everything after iphone 4 can be run off network in airplane mode.  Lots of apps like OSM, gaia, galileo.  I've not used any newer gps devices, used an old etrex for the Trans Am.  So yeah, a good start is learning to use an app on yr phone in tandem with looking for a dedicated GPS to purchase, or like some just put a ton of faith in your phone or a spare.

Can anyone who's done the West->East route recommend a good bike shop at the end for packing and shipping the bike back home?

I am planning on doing this in 2017 because I am currently in school and won't graduate till May 2017 so this is my graduation gift to myself.  Any tips from those that have done it or going this year would be great.

I am planning on either driving or biking out to the start this year, unfortunately I haven't been able to get anyone that can stay with my parent with ALZ and her dog during the race. I might have someone for short events after July though. Route66 is still viable.
