Has anyone used Bruce Gordon Rock'n'Roads (43mm) on these roads? Excited about volume, concerned about rolling resistance and (Cross Check) mud clearance... Guitar Ted liked them anyway.
I haven't used Bruce Gordon's on Iowa roads, but they're fantastic in Colorado. They should fit in a Cross Check just fine. Depends on the rims you're using, but they run pretty true to size in my experience. They also set up tubeless quite easily.

Haven't been out much. Couple rides with crappy street conditions have made it interesting. I took a header a week ago and am still sore. It's actually been depressing to be on the trainer for 4-5 hours. Doesn't look any different this Saturday.
How about you?

Was out yesterday in the snow for 5 hours. It was good going until it really snowed. Only managed 65 miles due to snow, food stops and waiting for a couple trains. I think the temp was 7 or so. Glad I got it done though.

I hear you. We've had a cold spell here too. Plenty of trainer and gym time. Got out for 4.5 yesterday, but really slow going with lots of snow on the ground. Some hike a bike, but I figure that's good training for TI!. Hang in there! It'll be worth it!

It's funny you mention the hike a bike. I just keep trying to ride over the snow and I guess I'd rather ride and fall before I hike it. Ive already fallen hard but I'll learn sometime

Oops pocket post. Just checking in. Training with a Fatbike. Lots of pushing, lately. Something tells me this year will be a little tougher.

The 10 MPH average for each leg should still hold for this year.

Just did a quite hilly, muddy, icy and packed snow while averaging 13. Just seeing where I need to be in comparison to where I am

I've gotten luck in that spring finally appears to be arriving here. 9 hours of outside riding from Saturday to Monday. It felt really good to not be confined to the hamster wheel in the corner of the basement.

I'm near Des Moines, IA. Snow is almost completely gone here. I'll be out for 4 or 5 hours on Saturday myself. Hoping to get some tire and other testing done.

Hey guys, back after a week of travel which meant no riding, but did mean that I got to go to NAHBS and check out some incredible bikes. Also had a chance to speak with Ira Ryan, 2-time winner of Trans Iowa and a great frame builder. He recommended a much lighter, narrower tire than I was considering. It all depends on weather, but the roads are typically very quick. Interesting to get another perspective.

I was planning on using Bruce Gordon 43s. Probably going with a Michelin Jet 30s that are a 35 on the tubeless wheels I have. That or a set of WTB 38s that I have. Ryan ran 28-30mm tires with no issues. We're both lighter riders.

Hey Nick did Ira indicated how he felt after the race? I look at the tire width as a mechanism to reduce fatigue. Yes, a narrow tire will be faster given the conditions but will beat the hell out of you if you are in the 28 to 31 hour mark. Make sure there is nothing on your back with a skinny tire, your butt will thank you later and not look like hamburger. If the roads are soft you will want a little more float so a wider tire will make a difference. 38's to 40's is what this guy has ran for my last three Trans Iowa finishes. Is it about finishing fast or finishing? There are trade offs.

How much is everybody riding, time wise, right now. I've been going 3 hrs plus on 5 of 7 days with a 7 hour ride on the weekend and I'm beat up.

Do not burn your self out - Think quality over quantity. My normal week is no more than 10 hours - 1/2 that is a long ride the other is broken out over some very structured rides with very specific intervals.
