Cost depends on number of people as we divide the costs - it's nominal as the drivers volunteer their time but ask for a pre-determined donation to their respective causes which are The Boys & Girls Club of Dalton and NWGA Sorba. The plan this year is to shuttle everyone over to lodging on Friday afternoon/evening and then to the start early Saturday morning. If you want to be part of it (even if you aren't using MGap for anything else, let me know asap as I need to get reservations made and need numbers). We charge $10/day if you want us to keep track of you on Spot - we check it around the clock and rescue you if necessary using your vehicle. You can also have a family member or friend track you and call us if needed (pick up is $15/hour for driver time and a fuel charge if using our vehicle is necessary). You can come through here along the route - we will have cots set up in The Barn for quick naps anytime of the day or you can rent a private cabin with AC for a full sleep at $50 (meals extra). Additional services we provide - Water, basic bike restock, meals, nutrition restock (suggestions as to what you might want are welcome since we know by the time you reach us you've consumed your fill of candy, donuts, etc), showers, laundry (it will refresh you!), encouragement (!), first aid and individual pick-up at the end. IF you think you will be using any of our services, we ask that you contact us, provide credit card information. If you don't use our services, no problem, no charge. If you do, we've got you covered. Carrying capacity for the first 2/3 of the race can be 2 bottles. Water is available on route pretty easy. After Dalton, that's a different story. Your speed, the heat, & fitness all come into play. A guess is 5 liters at least after Dalton. Probably more. |

Thank you. I'm not too worried about route finding, my fitness (although I'm not expecting to set any records, bears, bugs, sleeping, etc... the big unknown is where I'm going to get water and how much to carry. At least I have some sort of info to go on now. Much appreciated. |

I'm working up a list of my TNGA rig - I'm still dealing with some weight issues and I've not even finished adding in everything.
I'm bringing a 3 wire bivy (I know, a slight luxury - but I get claustrophobic if anything is on my face), an air matress and an emergency space blanket for cover. I could ditch the space blanket but I'm banking on solid comfortable sleep vs the weight.
the big question is alternate clothing. Anyone have any advice or ideas for lightweight clothing I could slip into at night so I don't have to sleep in my kit? Something that'll compress/pack down easily? Since it's Georgia...it's not like it's going to be a blizzard at the end of August.

Don't ditch the space blanket. In years past, it dipped into the 40's at night in higher elevation and staying warm was an unexpected issue.

Maybe the lightest weight silk, or wool long underwear for your sleep system. Carry some running shorts to put over them for modesty if you're staying at a crowded established campsite.

One small river crossing (wide creek?) and I can only recall one other creek. There may be more - but they aren't coming to mind. But it had been expressed by those with more route knowledge to not drink from the creeks as they are downstream from active farms. I suppose a filter can handle the "organics" but do they take out chemical (herbicides, pesticides, etc)? I don't know the answer and was not carrying a filter.
I had to go off route at either East or West Armuchee road to a church and got some out of their spigot. It was about 1.5 miles or so. I ran out again coming off the ridge between Hwy 27 and Hwy 100. It was way hot and I did that entire stretch from Snake Creek to the finish in the daylight hours.
I'm on the west coast now, not at all paying attention to the weather back east; is it a dry or a wet year?

It has been a very wet summer here in the Pisgah, NC area. Hopefully they have had similar fortune down West GA way.
I'll be carrying bleach only and will likely gamble with any water I encounter....

Look at the map of the area west of Dalton. The terrain is a little different than the eastern part of the route where you're constantly in and out of reentrants. You're following thin ridge lines most of the way to the AL border after Dalton. Geologically it's quite different as well, as you're literally on top of some of the deepest caves in the world and a lot of the water is underground. This area is known as the TAG area and attracts spelunkers from around the globe with deep vertical cave drops, some as deep as 600'. http://www.tagcaving.com/ |
