Anyone in for TNGA 2013? Don't know if there is a thread started or not. Am starting to run sections of it now, and wanted to kick things off if others are interested....

did 2012, that was a huge for me. I had thought about going with my photo equipment this year and catching the 2013 riders at various places - I'll just have to see if I have that weekend off.

On my list for 2013, does anyone have words of advice? Get ready to climb, the bugs are so large you'll be carried away. More rocks than......

Stickboy, get ready to climb....not a lot of singletrack, relatively, but a lot of what is there is challenging. Scott and Shey could give the best advice, they have both truly 'raced' it

My wife and I are doing the route in mid Feb looking at about 5 days. If we're still on the east coast in August, we'll be doing the 'race' as well.

Fat bike? No.
The second half is almost all single track. It's not much of a gravel grinder.

Climbing. Tough. Very tough. Bugs? Eh. I had some ants get in my Bivy.

I'll be back this year. Likely single speed again.
My advice is to be prepared for a lot of climbing in the first third of the race and a lot of single track in the last third.
No bugs that I noticed. Plenty of water on route. You might want to carefully plan your resupply points in advance. Beware of bears at Hogpen Gap.
It is a great route.

Thanks for the responses all !! For the guys that are running single speeds. You running a 34 or a 32 on the front? The opening of the race sounds like a thigh !!! Time to start looking over maps and resupply ideas.

When I started the TNGA I was running gears, when I finished I was running a singlespeed (ha). On Pinhotti III (which was probably the most un-fun and unrewarding trails) there was a giant tree lodged in the middle of the trail...there literally was no way around it and you had to hoist your bike over the top. When I did, it snagged my derailluer cable, later having it snap causing me to ride single speed the rest of the trip. I honestly don't know what I was running tooth wise, but I went in a 3x10
If I were to do the TNGA again (and I'd do it on a SS), I'd gear for massive climbing as you're pretty much going up or down. There's only a few stretches of long flats... like the last 10 miles are nothing but flats

Thanks Scott. Maybe we will cross paths at Barry Roubaix this year. Over 2,200 riders so far, it should be a great time..

Scott, you have to be talking about P4... P3 is pretty bad ass but that huge damn tree is still on P4! Someone should probably go clean that thing up...

Is there a website? If this is in August, it will probably be good for my first real attempt at ultra racing. Not to mention I live relatively close in Knoxville, TN and have hiked a ton of the area, so I know the terrain.

I went with my normal gearing last year - 32x20 with 29" wheels. I did a lot of walking, like the Hogpen climb, but also was really strong on a lot of the long climbs like Tray Mtn. The flats at times had me helplessly spun out and were utterly unbearable. Because of all the flats, of which there are a lot imo, I might consider gearing more aggressively next year. Tough call so I'll probably just stick with my normal gearing as it is what feels right to me. http://www.firstworks.com/tnga/index.html

Is this a race race or something you can do whenever you like? I'm interested but from what you guys say, the lack of singletrack may be annoying on a FS 26er.
