I'm in if I don't get a spot. I was talking to the guys at Harpers today and they were telling me just how ridiculously hard this race was though. So I'm not sure sub 70 is doable for me

Do they cost money for a shuttle? I'm from virginia and sorta poor, paying the gas to get to Asheville/Brevard will just about break the bank.

They do charge... It's miniscule for the service they provide... I totally feel you on being broke.
Are you on FB? Look them up if so and ask them their rates... It's reasonable. Also - Diane and ginny of Mulberry Gap are like my second moms

gearsconfuseme, I'll be coming from the Asheville area and will be looking for someone to help with the transportation logistics. I don't know how I'll be getting down there or back up here yet but would be happy to help you out if I can. I won't know my specific plans for awhile yet and am on the waiting list, so maybe check with me in a few months.
Mulberry Gap does provide a good service for the racers who chose to use their services. However, they are out of my budget and I would rather not have the temptation of possible support half way through the race so they are not for me.

Planning on TNGA 2013...I have a SC TallBoy that can lock out and a steel, rigid, SS 29er. Thoughts on which is better suited? Not interested in buying another bike for now....

I started out on the TNGA with a alumn superfly hardtail with front suspension. When I finished the TNGA I was on a superfly singlespeed as my back derailleur malfunctioned. If I was to do the TNGA this year I'd ride a rigid hardtail steel but with a rigid you'd get pretty beat up on some of the singletrack.
just remember, the TNGA is no gravel grinder and you're going to be on singletrack most of the time.

if you did Snake then you're golden. That, to me, was the toughest part - you just do it backwards on the TNGA.
From here then, all you need to worry about is that climbing. The first leg of the TNGA is 20k - generally you do that in a day, it's pretty brutal

Hey jktwice, go with the Tallboy. The descent into Helen on the first day can be done on a rigid but it really plays hell on the body, greatly hindering chances of a good finish. My first two attempts were on a rigid setup with narrow tires, yep attempts. |

Hi All : I'm looking for recommendations along the TNGA a route,for some activities to do, places/towns to hit, place to stay overnight, for my family while I'm out having fun on the TNGA route ?  Off the top of my head I was thinking more towards the middle or end of the route, but open to anything so they can enjoy this adventure as well. Thanks for the time and very much appreciated ! |

Helen, Blueridge, and Ellijay would be my 3 recommendations for family fun. All are on or near route. A handful of family members hang out at Mulberry Gap in Ellijay. Good chance you will stop there for a meal or other service as it is only 1/2 mile off route. They keep up with where riders are through Trackleaders and ANYONE who has ever visited will vouch for their food and unbelievable service. Think Southern Hospitality x100!
