Troy and Blair are blazing through the final miles of the route!  They are almost making it look easy Wink

They've got about 9 tough miles left, half a dirt road climb, then some more tasty GWT.  Once they get to Mccath lake it's a free ride all the way to Boulder.  They might even make it in time for dinner.

Troy, Blair, Dave - terrific job on working your way across SW Utah on the Trans Utah route.  It's been a real pleasure to see you work your way across the route I've spent so much time massaging.

Troy & Blair, congrats on being the first finishers!  And way to bust out that last day in short order.  Sure looked "in the zone" from my armchair Wink

So looking at Troy's text update at epicrider.com: "done at 6:23:25", and comparing with Blair's timestamps via trackleaders, it looks like you guys got separated at the end?  Story please Smiley  We can wait until you've got real sleep and food though.

Troy and Blair here in Escalante.  Trying to get back to St George.  Anyone in the neighborhood?Huh?
Anyway we finished together with the time I posted 6:23:25...  And ordered some great food at the Burr Trail Grill.
We were so stoked for Dave Kirk following his tire print, then a bit sad the last two days when we knew he left the route.

Some stuff from Memory here: 48K or 49K of climbing.  ~380 miles with maybe 4 or that of backtracking.  Ride time was like 2.5 days...
We built fires almost every night and the only cold night I had was at 8500 above pine lake when the wind was howling...
I had a phantom 32, an emergency bivy that I used mostly for a ground tarp, and a flece blanket.  Set my 8x5 sil tarp like a low tent fly near Long Willow Bottom Lake and stream at 9900 and stayed very warm but had ice all over my blanket by the morning.  We had a killer camp site there with wood and a grill for our Sausage and sweet potato sandwiches...
Anyway more pics and storys when we get back...
Tropic to Boulder IS the Crux and we had about 5 sour patch chews left when we got to our dinner in boulder...
GWT =  Goddamn western trail or Great Waste of Time or Go Walk-your-bike Trail....  god whatever trail...
GWT had lots of bike pushing and about 1000 trees to pick your bike over....
I was thinking I might do this route again until the the last 35 miles.... but maybe a few days will change my mind back...
If anyone can give us a ride then call my cell:   nine two eight  dash 853  dash 6656
Thanks for the crazy tracks to follow Dave!

Congrats to T and B for completing TU--really looking forward to reading all about it!  And Kirk!  Take an extra dang day off next time!!!

Meanwhile, Moobs and myself are slowly touring our way along the route.  We enjoyed some jungular Grandview goodness yesterday, and are currently feeling a bit, er, 'Tropical'.

Which is to say that as we finished loading pounds worth of M & M's onto our sleds we pointed them Powell-ward, but then stopped when we noticed Moobs rear wheel was a bit shonky.  We peeled off the tire and had a good gander, only to find that his rim is splitting down the middle.  Not so good.

If anyone has Hairball's cell #, would you please pass it along?  We're hoping to bribe him into loaning Moobs a wheel (*and* delivering it!!!) so that we can ride the last monstrous bit of this epic.  Realistically, we're prepared to hitch back to Moobs car in Boulder and come back some other time...

Any help 'preciated...

Hey all,
What a jammed packed full 1 1/2 weeks! Yes, it was a real bummer to have to bail with less than 80 miles to go. But it was an incredible ride. Talk about extremes. 95 degrees down to prolly mid teens @ 10k. Kind of pushed the limits of my ul spiral down hugger.
Fantastic fall color above 8,000 ft. Ah, Navajo lake, what can I say? I guess I didn't want to miss any of the VRRT;). There also was a bit of trail magic here. I flatted my newly filled tubless rear tire and was able to re-inflate with the use of my hand pump. Good times.
I'll try to do a write up, but as with my other rides, don't hold your breath!
Dave H., thanks for the hospitality, and all of the energy putting this bear together.
Later,
Dave K

Umm, wow.  Some amazing pictures in there, fall color and all.  I'm totally jealous.

Love the GWT alternate meanings.  icon_biggrin  Those trees do look like a bit of a chore.

Gotta make this happen next year!

Amazing.... simply amazing pictures. I love the red-leaf picture!

I might have to do an ITT version during my break next year if the dates don't line up.

Love the GWT alternate meanings.
From my time on sections n. of kimball junction and south of provo canyon, me thinks the best is "Great White Trash" trail for all the 4wheeler/moto doubletrack + hunters, etc.

Still, a dirty thru-route is a dirt thru-route and hard to resist when it links up singletrack sweetness along the way. Stunning scenery on GWT as well.

Speaking of great white trash trails, TU Boss, DH and teammate Coach Linda are probably shredding last laps (about now) on another known GWT at Behind-the-Rocks, UT en route to Solo SS national titles and top 3 overall solo men/women. Nice!

The official BP.net party line will most certainly be that it was thanks to all the early season bikepacking on the 2epic schedule.
