Having a bit of a problem uploading the GPX track to my etrex.  When using Garmin Basecamp it only transfers the first 150-200 miles of the track/route.
Do I need a bigger SD card or is Topofusion necessary.
Thanks

Matt

What you likely need to do is simplify and split. Haven't used the newest models but there should be at least 10,000 track points in 20 500 track units worth of storage in the unit. The track file is supplied at a higher resolution for planning purposes. Pretty sure Basecamp provides a means of reducing track points and then once your down to 10,000 it can then split it into 20 equal units. Check the specs on your unit find out how much saved track storage you have and then you'll know for sure what size and how many you can make. The more track points the better the res you get.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Tim
I will try that...

Edit... thumbsup

Seems to have worked.  Basecamp allows to "filter" tracks according to different parameters (distance, time, etc)...I just shortened the distance from about every 50-100 feet to every 300 feet and it reduced track number from around 50,000 to just under 10,000. headbang

Much appreciated...now to get out next weekend for a little preride

I had the same problem. So i copied the file that said 10,000 points.

Does this file have less waypoints?
From what you just explained, Im assuming, There are a bunch of dots to make up the trail on the map.. You have to spread them out a little further because the files is to big? So when navigating the trail this means the trail or line on gps isn't as detailed?

I also downloaded the same 10,000 point file for the Tour Divide trail. Obviously this is a much longer trail. Would it be better to have it saved in 500 mile sections or something similar? How easy would it be to get off route?

The difficult you're suppose to do right away.

You need to be aware of the limitations of your device.

10,000 points is enough for either route.

You should be able to download the free version of TopoFusion to condense the file to 10,000 points.  It's pretty easy.  Like others have said, 10,000 points is the limit.

Here's my walk through on how to download a GPX track, load it into BaseCamp, then import the track into your eTrex:

ok I just downloaded the AZTR 750 into my Garmin Map GPS 60csx and I see little breaks between the individual tracks.
When navigating on the trail, do you have to manually scroll to the next track when you reach the end of the first track to get the second track to display?
Too bad I can only put 20 tracks into a 32Gb micro chip, because I would like to have tracks for Prescott, Black Canyon and routes around Phoenix and Tucson.  Is it best to get a second micro SD chip and just change back and forth?  My GPS has limited resolution, limited colors and no shading, so putting lots of high res base maps into the unit is not productive and as someone said in the Tour Devide thread to not display basemaps to avoid clutter and confusion on the trail.  I still think having some kind of basemap would help for when leaving the route to resupply

I checked the 10k version of the 750 track out from Mexico to Phoenix, without seeing any weird breaks in the track line on my eTrex 20.

I'm not sure if adding an additional SD Card gives you more space for *tracks* - what it's usually used for is for saving *maps*. 10k point tracks are ~1MB each, so they're fairly small.

I would suggest just downloading the gpx2img program from the site below and create an overlay map.

Great way to load up huge tracks like the AZT, CTR, CDT, etc...  Also works wonderfully when you want to create trail maps for multiple areas you'll hit on an extended road trip.

Google gpx2img and you'll find plenty of links to tutorials and videos on the how-to.

It's so easy to resample a GPX track in TopoFusion down to 10K points. Just to be safe and away from any cliff edge limit in the hardware/software, I usually resize the huge files down to 9900 points. I've never felt the loss of track fidelity caused any additional navigational confusion...
