On the site, there is a gear that works thread, a scratch thread. etc... Those are the ones that seem to be the most helpful to newbies like myself. I thought that it might make for a good resource of lessons learned to start off here in the ultra racing subforum and get moved into the question and answer subforum later. Ultra racing seems to highlight the gotchas that can be encountered and sometimes even the simplest thing to one person might get overlooked by another. So, from a tactic, equipment, mental preparation standpoint, what did you do right, wrong or will change?
I didn't race, but I did find these things. WRONG.... - Correct saddle is paramount. Mine was good for 8 hours. After that... Not so good. - I learned to prioritize my actions when I stopped for the day by NOT prioritizing every time I stopped for the day. Are batteries charged? Are your riding bibs/shorts dry and clean? Are your clothes dry? - Chamois creme is not the only thing needed for undercarriage maintenance issues. A-D ointment, Desetin, etc... You might NEED them badly. - Eating. Have I eaten anything lately. I was overwhelmed by the scenery and was never hungry and for that I was weaker than I should have been. - A can of soup can be a hard thing to pack in a seat bag. - Practice going through stores and gas stations looking for on the road foods. I'd get to a stock point tired and nothing sounded good to eat. Newbie mistake.
RIGHT.... - Modified expectations based on each day. - Cans of soup are heavy but a hearty can of soup can raise your spirits if you stop to take a breather. - A good trail mix split into several small plastic bags. Easy to access and broad enough texture and taste spectrum that it isn't terribly boring. - Talked to myself a lot. I shot selfie video with my Sony action cam to keep the edge off the loneliness. It's great to watch those when you are home.
Just some of my random thoughts based on my experience limited as it was.
