what is bikepack race with the next most technical/rough single track after AZTR and CTR (or perhaps greater than)?

Check out the Highland Trail Race in Scotland. Designed by a CTR vet. Super gnarly in some spots, overall I bet I walked 50-100 miles of it - mainly because i'm not a good technical rider. Not the "singletrack" we're used to in the US - imagine 1000-year old "roads" and "postal paths" with 12-24" wide water channels running through them. Ledges and water everywhere. 6" wide singletrack through peat tufts as high as your hubs. I've never ridden so much rock in my life.

The adirondack trail race claims to be pretty technical, but I haven't ridden it yet.

When people first started doing the Triple Crown some thought it should be the AZT,CTR, and the California Sierra Trail Race, not the TD. Seeing how TD is more of a dirt road ride.
I wonder if the Black Hills Expedition doesn't have a higher ST to road ratio.

Looks like Dan got there before me... Highland Trail Race. Proper riding in big mountains.
Lakeland 200 would be another if you're looking for a one day (maybe more) tough ride in the UK.

California Sierra Trail Race, has a bunch of sweet single track. There's some good technical riding on the east and south shore.

From personal experience the Highland Trail 550 has more technical riding than the AZT or CTR. Its also a lot wetter, even in a dry year. That said its low elevation and mild temp with easy water and food resupply . For pure wow factor the HT 550 was beyond expectations for this American rider.
I would highly recommend it go on any multi-day racer's bucket list. (Note: as the field size is limited you need some demonstrated multi-day finishes to get on the start list--so the quality of GD starters is a bit higher than what you might see in the AZT or CRT)

This is a good question for someone like Dylan Taylor who has done more of these events than most riders. I've wondered how The Black Hills Expedition stacks up on this list? It seems to have one of the highest attrition rates. CTR and HTR from personal experience are really tough single track but I've never done AZT.

While tough and singletrack-ish, not technical. Also is not free (7,000 Czech Crowns / 270 Euro), and is more adventure race or non-stop-Euro-brevet ethos than of bikepack race ethos. Has 2 or 3 checkpoints where rider can send package ahead through race org. Registration was Jan1, limited to 150 spots which are full with already ~100 wait list.
